Eiger Backfires?

My friend's dad owns an 02 Eiger Auto that he graciously lets us borrow to ride around his gravel pit. Every once in a while after running wide open for a spell, it starts running like the choke is on. It will stutter and stall, and I actually had to turn the choke on to make it back. The first time it happened, it was right after it was started and it seemed like the choke cable was stuck, so I fiddled with it and it came out of it.
His dad just said it started really hard the other night, too.
Any Ideas? Carb? Timing?
Oh the belt seems to be slipping every now and then too. Is this a common occurence?
Thanks Guys

Stock right down to the original oil yet. It only has about 200 miles on it.
This just started within a month or so.
Could dirty gas cause it? They have old gas cans at the pit and I wouldn't be surprised if there's dirt in the cans.

I have an '03 Eiger and experienced these same spitting and puking problems.
My solution was:
A. Drain float bowl...there was water and small debris in the float bowl due to lack of fuel filter. There is a drain screw on the left side bottom of the float bowl.
B. Install an inline fuel filter...$3 to $10 depending how exotic you get.
C. Reroute the vent line under your seat...it has a tendency to get pinched.
If you run on "PRIME" ...you do not have a reserve in your tank. It can be a long walk
