Default cracked cylinder on lt500

went riding today to get things ready for the grassdrags that are coming up. when i got it loaded we noticed that there were cracks on each side of the cylinder on the back of the jug bolts about 1-2 inches long. my question is can i leave the cylinder on to weld it up?

NO,the heat will be hard on gasket's and aluminum aint the easiest to weld.

well i think its far enough away from the gasket not to hurt it but im wondering about warping the cylinder ill have the same guy that welded it before.

Aluminum is very hard to warp with heat but the heat transfers very quickly and probably will damage your gaskets. From my experience of hours tig welding aluminum, it is very hard and you better get it very clean and a damn good welder to do that.

the cracks are only about 1-2 inches long and im hoping that this will work cause the drags are on saturday and the last thing i want to do is tear this thing back apart. does anyone know the best way to go about this on fixing it.

I know what it's like to have this happen, mine cracked like dirtdawg's did and during a run down the quartermile.I took it apart to have it welded up to get it ready for a race, plus I too did'nt want to loose my porting nor the bore size.I got it all back together and made the race, but the weld job only lasted the race then cracked again only on the side of the weld.Took it apart again and had it welded, well to make the story short I ended up buying a New cylinder and had to give up the bore size but had the same porting done,I hate to say it but a new cylinder would be safer to the engine.

A good friend of mine had his welded up by Trinity. They really built it up on the back base bolts and he had to use different bolts to put it back on with. That's been a couple of years ago and no problems so far.
