Z400 jetting more ?????
#1
Anyone who lives in the midwest with a tried and true jetting setup for my 04 Z - need your help. Have airbox lid on, K & N air filter, team suzuki yoshi slip on, dynojunk kit W/ 124 main, their needle set at 3rd position, fuel screw out 3.5 turns, and stock pilot jet. This thing seems to bog really bad at about 1/8 or 1/4 throttle, and then seems fine. Ran it last night wrung out thru all the gears and did a plug chop and the plug is white. This damn dynojet kit is driving me nuts, and their tech support is little help. I know my main jet is too small, but what about the pilot jet, needle, fuel screw setting, and everything else? Just want a little more power but dont want to sacrifice reliability in the process. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

That engine loves to breathe! You pretty much wasted your money on the pipe if you don't pull that lid off. It will make all the difference. I don't like to run completely open, so I use the EHS lid that is vented with a piece of Outerwears (http://www.ehsracing.com/).
I ran K&N's for years, but have gone back to foam. Pro-Flow has a nice setup for the Z (http://www.prodesignracing.com/main.htm).

I plan on taking the lid off, but I'm gonna try to figure out what a good place to start on the jetting would be first. It seems really lean right now, and I dont wanna burn it up. They need to make the Z fuel injected for carb morons like me, thought about trading for a dale but they seem to be as much of a headache from what I hear Thanks for the input

K, like I said before I realize that the main jet is probably too small, but that still leaves me scratching my head as far as my low rpm bogging problem. I think the thinner taper needle may be my problem. After work im going to change my main jet, but I dont know which direction to head in W/ my low rpm woes. Pilot Jet? Mixture screw? Lean the needle out? Its so bad it almost dies in reverse backing it off the trailer. I'm not trying to be a pain in the a$$, or run this topic into the ground, but i am doubting that changing the main jet is going to be a cure all. Any info about the OTHER jets and settings would be greatly appreciated.

Dude! Fix what you KNOW is wrong, then work on the other stuff. Heck, I could swear I put in a larger jet than yours, even with only the STOCK exhaust & snorkel removed, and that wasn't too rich. (I often ride at sea level, or 1500'.)
Even though the main doesn't affect the lower throttle settings much, it will some, so replacing the jet will get you one step closer to fixing the low end problem. Besides, if you get it perfect at 1/4, then change the main, 1/4 may no longer be perfect.
Also...do you remember how different the new and old needles looked? They should be nearly identical (with the naked eye, holding them side by side), except for the new DJ has more grooves for setting it. I got a Moose kit once that had the wrong needle in it--and you thought YOU have problems!?!? It wouldn't even idle, and the needle isn't supposed to effect idle.
