My brother Johns 97 300cc KQ is slipping in 4-5th gear on moderate to hard accerations. He was ready for an oil change and filter,so I did that and road tested the quad for slippage,it did slip in the above mentioned gears. The slipping has JUST started.Anyonw with a service manual? My question's are?

1.Is there an adjustment for the clutches on this model?
2.How is the adjustment done?

My sincere thanks to anyone capable of helping, once again,
Thank You,
Bill

From Suzuki LT-4WD Service Manual under "Periodic Maintenance and Tune-up Procedures" section 2 page 11.
Clutch
*Inspect initial 200km(100 miles) and every 2000km(1200 mies)
-Remove the right rear tire.
-Remove the clutch adjuster cap bolt. (above and left of oil filter)
-Loosen the lock nut.
-First loosen the release screw and tighten it until resistance is felt. -From that position, loosen the release screw 0-1/8 rotation, and tighten the lock nut while holding
the release screw.
-Install the clutch adjuster cap bolt properly.

Other causes of slipping clutch listed in the troubleshooting section are weakened clutch springs, worn clutch shoes, worn or distorted pressure plate, distorted clutch plates-driven and drive, any of which call for replacement.
How many miles are on it?
John

John,
My sincere thanks for your information regarding the clutch adjustment.I called the Suzuki dealership and they would tell me nothing except to bring it in.I knew the adjustment procedure was probably easy,so why pay the dealer hard earned $$ for something I can do?The quad has 1500 miles on it and they are not real hard miles. The quad has sat for about 3 months before my brother rode it again, than the clutch slips in 4th and 5th gear. The quad had 20w-50 oil in it for the summer months,I changed it over to 10w-30 fully synthetic for the colder months.I tested the quad for slippage after the oil change,it did slip on hard accelerations.I let the quad sit for about a half hour to come in here and post my question about the clutch adjustment, ran outside to try it again, and the damn thing STOPPED slipping.Go figure this one out?

ANYWAYS,im going to try it again, first thing in the morning and see if it slips.Im also going to make the clutch adjustment as described by you,John.
Thanks for your help,
Bill

Sorry, didn't see your post earlier, Bill. I'll be checking with you to see how you made out. I have the service manual for John's quad but have not had problems with slippage. Will be checking the adjustment soon, on my KQ, for the clutch and engine valve clearance.

I checked the quad this morning before I adjusted it,it did NOT slip.I adjusted it anyways,It was really not that far off.I wonder if the fact it sat so long had affected the clutches?Anyhow, its fine now,
Thanks,
Bill

Bill did you know the recommended oil for the King Quad is 10w40? I stopped to pick up some oil for my 95 KQ yesterday and I had decided to use synthetic oil but the guy at the dealer said not to use synthetics or automobile 10w40 because it has too much anti friction compounds in it and the autoclutch needs special additives so I got 4 stroke 10w40 on his recommendation. He said it might slip on synthetic or car oil. He may be wrong but he's a mechanic so I beleive him

While the quad was sitting it's very possible that the fiber plates froze up.Then after awhile the oil resoaked the plates and therefore no slippage.

rkelman,
I have used synthetic's for yrs in the KQ and have experienced no problems until recently.Im aware the recommended oil is 10w 40,however,in the really hot summer months,It hurts nothing to run a thicker viscosity oil.It also hurts nothing to run a lighter viscosity in the winter.I usually like to go to the lighter viscosity in the winter because the KQs tranny is also lubed by the engine oil.===Bill
