Yes the ball joints come out of the a-arms, yes 90 a-arms will work on an 87.

They attach to the spindles via a clamping collar and one falling out doesn't mean its trash, you may just have to tighten the collar. Now if the 2 parts of the ball joint itself came apart then it def. is trash.

Piston slap on a 30 hour top end can mean (as you were thinking) bad bore, bad wrist pin, bad wrist pin bearing, or even bad lowerend bearing. Id pull the cylinder since tope end gasket kits are cheap and check the piston skirt for wear... oh and also if your bridge wasn't relieved after the bore job this could be snaging a ring.

i know what relieving the bridge is. ON your exhaust port, there is a little bridge that comes down the middle so your rings cant go into the exhaust port, like a little bridge over your exhaust port.well, since that is the hottest part of the cylinder during operation, that little spline will expand and push against the piston. your suposed to file or sand that bridge down a couple of thousandths,im not sure exactly how much but when my mechanic did mine it took like 1 minute to do and he didnt even charge me.This is not an optional preventative maintenance thing, its very very necessry. i wouldnt ever put a top end on withouth having that done.
YOU have to do that sharp edge removing thing too.

BE CAREFUL!!!! This happened to me a while back. I thought nothing of it, but it back together, tightened it up good and went riding. A couple hours into the ride the ball joint came out again except this time I was goin pretty fast. The A-arm hit the ground and the bike flipped sending me over the bars. Bent the A-arm and the frame plus I was in pain for for a week. Get a new ball joint and screw from Suzuki, it'll cost about 40 bucks but could save you alot more.
