87 Quadrunner LT230E - Questions

I have a 87 Quadrunner LT230E. I have been seaching for the past couple weeks for any aftermarket parts that might extend the fender coverage over the front tires and out/back on the rear tires. Just trying to minimize mud/water spray as I ride. Anyone have any thoughts?
Also, one problem I have is if I accelerate quickly through the gears then let off the gas, the quad tends to backfire once or twice. What do I adjust to fix that? Thanks.

There are stock mud flaps that bolt to the front plastic. They hang down and protect pretty well from the front tires. Most people take them off because it looks sportier without them and they can cause cracks in the front plastic where they bolt. There's not much you can do about the top of the front fenders or the rear fenders. There actually were aftermarket front mud flaps that you could bolt to the top of the front fenders that stuck forward, but these were discontinued long ago and you will never find a set, plus they looked really bad.
As far as your backfire, a little backfiring during deceleration is normal. If it's extreme, there's a good chance you need a valve job done. I'd take off the head and have it vacuum checked by a machinist. While you're at it, check to see that the timing chain is not stretched. Buy a factory suzuki shop manual if you don't already have on. It will give you the specs for the timing chain and also help you tear down the engine and put it back together. I've got an extra one I could sell you if you need one, otherwise check on eBay.
Also keep in mind that these machines are very similar to the quadsport 230S. If you want a little more pep, consider using a sport cam and carb. They're both a little more high performance. Also, the plastic on them is nearly identical and can be used interchangeably.

For fender coverage, find a local Parts Unlimited or Automatic Distributors dealer. They have "universal" flaps & even side protectors. You can still get the stock LT230S ones from BikeBandit.com too

There are lots of little differences. The main big differences are that the 230S Quadsport is a manual clutch 5 speed with a kickstart. The 230E quadrunner is an auto clutch 5 speed with electric start and recoil backup. The bikes look nearly identical. The plastic is molded the same. The E has holes in the top of the rear fenders because most E's came with a rear rack. (It was standard on the early models and an option on the later models. The E also had an optional front rack that is very rare.) The E also has a plastic cover that goes over the indentation where the kick starter lever is on the quadsport. The E also has steel wheels compared to alluminum for the sport. The frames have the same geometry but are not identical in several ways. The sport also has a larger carb and a slightly higher performance cam.
If you want more specific differences, let me know. Otherwise, these are the only differences worth mentioning unless you are wondering if certain parts will work from one bike to the other.

BTW: do you know of any source(s) for the front and rear racks? Sounds like they would fit my S with some holes drilled through the plastics.

As far as the electric start, GOKI is now offering it's electric start kits for the sport again. (They offered them from the mid 80's up until the early 90's or so and then they dissapeared. They're fairly expensive though --around $300.)
As for the racks, I may have an extra rear E rack, but I'm not sure what shape it's in -- I'll have to check. Plus, the rack will not quite fit on the sport grab bar. The grab bar on the E is slightly larger and has fatter tubing than the one on a sport. (I think I have an extra grab bar for the E also, but the E grab bar is black and doesn't look as good as the chrome sport grab bar.) With a little modification, the rack would probably fit on the stock sport grab bar. Otherwise, there are companies that offer aftermarket racks for the sport. Shade Tree ATV used to offer them, but I don't see any offered on their website. However, if you call them, there's a good chance they still have some. They also had aftermarket front racks that they no longer advertise. As far the factory front optional rack on the E, you'll never find one. I've never seen one. I only know they exist because of my microfische. Also, the bolts that hold the front plastic on under the grille are larger on the E. (The nuts welded on the frame are larger. This is one of the many minor differences of the E frame.) It uses these for the optional front rack. The sport bolts are probably a little too small to hold much. Another reason to look for an aftermarket one.
Also, just another piece of useless trivia, Suzuki made an optional 6 pack rack for the stock sport grab bar. (I've got one still in the bag with Suzuki part # and all.) It clamps to the grab bar and will hold a small cooler. Pretty cool.
