Thanks whats the best mods to do to a Z. Would be looking into some type of air additive (Ride trails with mud and water, would a K&N with a prefilter be OK with no airbox?), maybe a FMF pipe, and a 440 big bore kit. I have riden this quad, and i would just like more power on the bottom and all around i guess. Looking into an 03. Even though it was the first year? is it still a good quad. What if any canges were made from 03 to 04. Thanks for the help.

The She is no trail bike! It has a pipey powerband with now low end (where you operate on a trail) that makes it a poor choice for trails.

The Z is a superb trail bike. It does well on everything except the most technical terrain.

Here is the thing, if you leave the air box lid off you are gonna get water, mud, sand, etc in the box. If you know your gonna be riding though water, then be sure to remove the drain plug on the bottom of the airbox so it can drain. You don't want to be sucking water into your engine! Also, if you go with a replacement part directly from K&N, there will be a small gap on the left side of the filter. Go to your local hardware store and buy a "3 1/2in. Basket Strainer Washer" which should be somewhere in the plumbing section. It fits almost too well. You will have to bore out the flange a little to accomodate the added thickness, but a little hard work for A LOT of piece of mind is worth it. Hope this helped!

What about the airbox elimination kits? When the K&N comes directly out of the intake?

Those are great too, but they make me really nervous. You have to REALLY be careful about water with those, because there is NO protection from sucking water into your engine. If the water is over your tires, you run that risk with such a set up and relying on the outerwear to keep water out is a huge gamble. The big thing that you have to ask yourself is, do you really think that you will notice much of a difference between "no lid" and "no box"? Probably not. There is PLENTY of air flow without taking off the box completely. A great alternative would be to go to ALBA (www.albaaction.com) and check out thier K&N kit with mounting bracket. It comes with a new mounting bracket that works inside of your stock air box. You keep the box and it eliminates that gap I was talking about. Just another one of those things that are out there. Probably what I would do. But hey, in the end it is YOUR quad. Let me know what you decide!
