Default water in air box

i went riding a few days ago and went through some large puddles. when i got home i checked my air filter and saw that there was a lot of water in the box (i think it was water). i emptied it out but it sat in there for about two days and my air filter was soaked so i changed it. do you think any damage to the motor was caused? is this common?

If you rode it home with no spats and sputters, nothing happened internally. Do you ride without an airbox lid? This could be common if you ride without a lid. If you do have a lid, you may want to look into an Outwears Pre-filter. I believe these to be a GoreTex(highly acclaimed waterproof material, commonly used in hunting clothing)"lining" that goes over the actual air filter to keep water out.

No they dont rob any air and i would put one on if your getting water in b/c if your running a K&N it will be expensive to replace or any filter for that matter

They are even more important to run if you are running a K&N because the water will cause the fibers in the filter to swell.

A hose won't do. It will probably lodge the dirt farther into the foam. Secondly the filter is oiled and the water won't do much without filter cleaner. Go to the cycle shop and get some filter cleaner (Klotz is the best I have used) and follow the instructions on the can or bottle. Make sure you re-oil the filter or you will do more damage than getting water in the motor.

Organic cleaners such as Super Green, or any Citris (Orange Juice) type degreaser will work as well. K&N filter cleaner is just over priced degreaser. I take the above cleaner, pour into a tuperware dish with lid thats big enough to hold filter and shake the dickens out of it, let it set a few hours, and repeat till clean. I've cleaned my foam filters like this for 3 years now and haven't had any deteriation problems yet. Plus, when your done, you have all the degreaser left, to re-use and/or to shine up the bike.
