LT250R wants to die when shutting choke off
1988 LT250R
Has been running perfectly for years, but this winter I went to ride it and could not turn the choke off without it wanting to stall. It will still run with the choke off but I have to keep applying throttle to keep it going. The idle level is good, new plug, new gas, clean air filter. When I do shut the choke off it revs up briefly and then goes into a bog (similar to a fouled plug). Just wondering if anyone has dealt with this. I'm going on a quad trip this weekend and I don't want to babysit this thing the whole time. My next step I guess is to take the carb off and clean it thoroughly.
thanx

Sounds like a partially or toatally plugged up pilot jet, or the mixture screw/air screw is out of adjustment. Make sure the hole down the middle of the pilot jet, is clean, use a wire to push out the crusty stuff if you have to. Most of the time just carb cleaner and compressed air wont dislodge it.

Take the carb off and completely clean it, it could be the pilot jet, but it could be something else. Make sure you spray carb cleaner in those little holes of the air inlet and that they flow freely. Also check you idle air screw and it should be about 2 turns out.

Check the seal on the ignition side of the crank. To do this pop the stator cover off then start the machine, once started spray carb cleaner or starting fluid behind the flywheel. If there is a leak the quad will rev up from the fluid being sucked through the broken seal.Just another thing for you to check take care

I appreciate all of the responses!!! I cleaned the carb thoroughly. The only sign of dirt was inside the pilot jet, so I got it out and all was good. Hondabuster nailed it! And I did have to use a wire to get it out. But thanks to everyone, I had a blast this weekend. This was a perfect example of the forum at work.
