Default Electrical issue

I have heard that you can tell if you have a electrical problem, if you disconnect the positive wire of battery while running. If the atv dies, is this a indicator that there is a electrical issue and its just running off the battery. I am confused as if to take it to the shop for 4 weeks or take a guess its the regulator rectifier. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

id imagine the quad should run wihtout the battery...i dont have a wiring diagram infront of me but once its running the alternator is generating the juice to spark not the battery.

Yes it should run without the battery. Only needs it to start. Once its running the stator makes then power needed. Ive ran my quad by bump starting it when my battery was dead.

If it doesnt stay running maybe your stator is weak and not producing enough power, but you should know that becuase your battery wont last very long.

That's not a great idea. If you have an ecu and you disconnect your battery you run the risk of frying it.

Running with a dead battery and running with a disconnected battery arent the same thing. Electricity needs a full circuit, to run properly. Think about it this way...if you pull one wire off of a light...will it still stay on?
Some motorcycles, which use magnetoes, and have batteries, can be disconnected, and the motor will still run. But if you have a stator, and a battery coil ignition, it wont run without the system hooked up.

Honda buster I was talking to a shop and they said theycould test my regulator rectifier to tell me if it ok or not .Was wandering if you think this would be a good idea to try first or haul the quad in .Im looking where the regulator is and think it wouldnt be no biggie to replace. I have found a regulator for 93 bucks .

Actually, Your battery should be connected in parallel with not in series. Being connected in parallel will allow the circuit through the stator and voltage regulator continue to fire the ignition.

ok so,

your quad should run if you bump start it with a dead battery connected

but

wont run if you bump start it with no battery in it?

I cant remeber well but i think i was going to take it out but i left the dead one in becuase it was easier i belive. It was able to start it and run fine by bumping it but when we went riding for 20 mins it shut off. I thought becuase my CDI connecting piece tab broke off so its zip tied in and doesnt want to stay connected all the time so i figured thats why it shut off. BUT when we went to bump start it it would sometimes half a** start and run very low like there was hardly any power to keep it running but would slowly run and then shut off after 2 sec.

Well you could probablt jumpstart it without a battery, but when you disconnect the cables and there's nowhere for the juice to go, it'll start seeking ground. Like magnetic poles seek each other. And when that happens you end up with juice on wires that weren't meant to be and wierd series-parrallel circuits that weren't meant to be either. Electricity always takes the shortest path to it's opposite. And a capacitor is basically 2 conductors di-electrically connected, not really connected just magnetically coupled. If theres nowhere for this juice to go and it does build up capacitance it might just discharge through your cdi or ecm and fry it.
