crashed my Z400 had to buy A new frame. Still ran but frame was history. Put it all back together now the only way I can start it is by spraying some starting fluid in the air cleaner. But that makes it run so hot the pipe turns red hot. any insight on what to do?

Does it only run on the starting fluid or does it run on its own after you start it? If it doesnt run on its own, try turning the fuel petcock to the prime (foreward) position.

I would take it in before you burn it up
sounds like your running way to lean to red the pipes
or you have one hell of a vacuum leak

Starting fluid burns very hot, it might be a good idea to try carb cleaner insead.

If you have 05 or 06 it's probably got the titanium head pipe like the yfz. These are a lot thinner than steel but just as strong. The titanium ones will get red and is normal. BUT I'M NOT TELLING YOU IT'S DEFINETELY NORMAL IN YOUR CASE. Does it run on gas ? Or does it only run while your squirtin ?

Vac leak causes a lean condition. That backfiring is a sign of being lean. Not saying that a backfire means that it is lean, just that it's one of the symptoms. Could timing chain have skipped? Just another possibility. What color is spark plug? Have you tried running it choked? If it's lean, it will run better choked. Make sure your actually getting fuel to carb, then try the choke thing. If you can get it running on choke you can use that starting fluid to find vac leak. BE VERY CAREFUL--FLAMMABLE Spray around suspect area, if it revs up you found your leak.
