Me and my wife race XC and as nice a bike as the 400 is after boring the motor out for racing heat dissapation is such a problem I don't know how much of a problem with heat you MX guys have but you die by it in XC with all the mud. I added a oversized oil tank to the ex (which is bored to 428 by the way) and we still couldn't keep the motor as cool as I would like. That is why we switched to the Z400 for this year. Liquid cooled is so much better than air cooled. That is why you don't see YFZ450's that are air cooled. If you plan on rec riding then I would go with a 400ex. Very reliable and great handling. Plus it has reverse now which is always nice. If you plan to race I would go with the Z400. Liquid cooled and its got a ton and a half aftermarked parts all lined up. Pick what you want and hit the track.

I'd say get the Z400, better everything; suspension, motor, liquid cooled, faster, a bit better handling, and IMO it is just as reliable as the EX.

I bought a leftover '05 KFX400 for $5245 OTD.
I also considered the TRX400 before buying.
I had a few additional observations which led me to the KFX:
Seat height on the Kawazuki is about 2" taller than the Honda. Even though the specs on the web sites read the same, there is a difference. In fact, with me on the KFX at 220#, it sagged to the height of the Honda with nobody on it. I felt cramped on the TRX, but feel great on the KFX. I'm 6'3".
The battery on the Honda is exposed - inside the left rear fender. It'll be exposed to everything you ride through.
Go to the dealer and take the seat off the KFX and Honda. The Honda is a royal pain to get off and back on. The rear plastic comes off with the Honda seat. The Kawi seat comes off and goes back on with ease.
Also, the tool tube cap on the Honda needs a remedy. Although minor - it's a very loose fitting cap, and I can see the cap getting jostled off. It's an easy enough fix with some creativeness from your local Home Depot. Heck - even if it's a sheet metal screw or two.
I've only ridden my new Kawi once, and 1st gear is pretty low, and second is a bit taller, so there are times when 2nd is too tall, and 1st seems too low. I'm confident a -1T countershaft sprocket will make 2nd very usable in the trails.

Unless Honda updated the motor for 2006 it is the same as the 1999 except for reverse and the plastic. The Z was improved in 2005 and my 2003 Z400 (stock at the time) would beat my bro-in-laws piped 400ex every time. (we ran several times and switched and ran several more). My understanding is that the Z400 also responds to mods better than the EX and as was already mentioned the EX is air-cooled, the Z is water cooled. I believe they are about the same price too. The Z has already proven it is about as reliable as the Honda. If I was going to get a 400ex I would find a good used one for about $3,500. I've seen some ads that claim they have hardly been ridden since they didn't have time.
