Adjusting Z400 Chain
#1
I just recently bought a used Z400 and it has a new chain on it that needs to be adjusted. i am probably going to ride it tomorrow (its not at my house right here) and i just wanted to know how to adjust the chain "tightness" considering i dont have the owners manual yet. im guessing its pretty easy but i looked at it a couple days ago and it looked a little more complicated than my blaster. just wanted to make sure i do it right. kinda a n00b question i guess..... if anyone could breifly explain it i would really appreciate it. otherwise ill probably be able to figure it out. thx

His '03 is different from the '04s and newer. The '03 is a 2 bolt tensioner, while the newer design is a single.
Loosen the 4 bolts on top of the swing arm. Turn both of the tensioner bolts (on the back face of the swinger) in equal amounts until you have a little more than 1" total play in the chain. When you're doing this make sure turn BOTH bolts evenly and check to make sure the carrier/axle stays straight. Then tighten the 4 bolts on top.

Your correct but strongtyerYFZ didn't specify what year he had. All he had to do was search like I did there are quite a few threads askin this question.

I didn't even look at his sig, that'll learn me. Most the time I find in the posts people make askin for help they leave out needed information. It's hard to give a good answer without having all the necessary information.

Make sure you torque the 4 bolts that go through the swingarm. I had one of the 2 adjusting bolts brake while I was riding, because the 4 bolts were not tight enough to hold the carrier in place.
The bigger bolts 17mm head is about 72ft lbs
The smaller bolts 14mm head are around 52ft lbs
I dont remember exactly what the specs are, but Im sure both are within 5ft lbs.

sorry, i meant to put that... it is an 03' i looked at it a couple days ago but didnt have time to tighten it. just wanted a quick heads up. i know i shoulda searched.... shame on me. but in some cases it is nice to post a new thread that people are more likely to respond to if you have a new question. for the vs. threads people should just search, i agree. especially the yfz vs. 450R ones that used to be daily.
i think welby pretty much summed up the answer i was looking for. im going to adjust it tomorrow probably. thanks for the help. ill be more clear next time..... or just search
