Default z400 rev limiter??

Is there a rev limiter on the '03 z400? I recently purchased it used after it sat for a while. I just had the carb cleaned and adjusted. It seems to run well, although it breaks up at the top of 1st gear as if having a rev limiter. If this is true, is there any way to adjust it? It feels like it should have more rpms in 1st. Or is there another problem? Thanks.

Yeah it is at about 8k rpm's it does come quicky. The only way that I know of to get rid of it would be to get an aftermarket CDI.

I put a big gun cdi on mine. +1200 rpm and advanced timing curve. Really woke it up, and gave me a few more r's to play with. They say carry your stock cdi with you if you install an aftermarket one, I do but haven't had a problem yet. Although I've only had 1/2-1 tank of gas through it.

Stock rev limiter is ~9000rpm's. It also has a rev limiter in reverse, im guessing ~3000 rpm's. There is a way to override the reverse rev limiter so its ~9000 rpm's. The only way to increase the 9000 rpm rev limiter is an aftermarket CDI.

Dyna has a very good CDI, advances timing curve, has hotter spark and a rev limiter of 10,500. They sell a programmable version and a non-programmable version. advantagecyclelc.com has good prices on the Dyna, non-programmable version for $215, programmable version for $360. I would get the cheaper version.

I got my cdi from A&B Etreme right on this forum for $107.?? The 03/04 cdi might be cheaper too, because it's the older version. But the newer (05/06) won't fit yours.
