my 05 z400 getting beat in top end by 03 z400

his is a bone stock 03 z400, mine is an 05 with hmf slip on, uni filter, air lid off, and bigger main jet that came with the pipe. my bike will pull like 3 lenths on his from a low gear punch, but when we hit 5th and are close to topping out he will pass me. how could this be? the 05 should out run an 03 even stock with the bigger cam and carb, right? any thoughts?

i thought the 05s were faster too. he didnt secretly get a sproket or something did he? or some other mod?
maybe hes a better rider! naaa. just kidding.
i dont think suzuki changed internal gearing, did they? some OEMs do that between certain model years. yamaha did it with the 660 raptor, honda did it with the 250R, 400EX, 450R...maybe 5th was taller before the 05? or final drive ratio was different? dont know dude. just trying to throw out some reasonable ideas.

?!!! you should be able to beat him. i went 1 tooth down on front sprocket so i lost a little of the top but i havent been beat by a stocker. i'll hang with a 450r till 4th and then they will get me. if he's a friend i'd try and trade bikes and see what his feels like.is he lighter than u?

I probably weigh 15 lbs more than him if that. He has no mods, and the bike is not as well taken care of as mine. I,ve rode his bike plenty of times and it feels weaker. my throttle response is alot better, and the low and mid range on mine feels much stronger. maybe i need a full jet kit as opposed to just the maun jet. don't know but it kinda pisses me off

Sounds like your running lean.... What size did you go to on the main jet... When you remove your lid you have to jet up signifcantly more then usuall.. Your running lean which allows you to have good pep off the line but topend you wont have much becuase there isnt enough fuel. If you dont have any extra jets but your lid on and see how it runs.. Go to the dealer ship and get a 165 mj and then take your lid off. Also go to the hardware store and get a #4 brass washer to shim your low end needle. Once you do this your quad will be even more faster and you will be smoking your friends POS.

i,ve got a 170 main jet. with the air lid on it cuts out in the mid range.

I have a 168 main juet on my z with a 450 motor with head work and big cams a 170 in a stock motor is way to big unless your up high or something try 150-160 main jets I had a 155 on mine when it was stock with a ct full system and I still though it ran a tad rich.
