King Quad Belt Slippage
#1
I am new here. I have purchased a 06 King Quad. I took it on a 61 mile ride the other day and stuck it in a creek with water almost up to the seat-had to winch it out.
Once out, my blet was slipping but I continued to ride (probably my big mistake). After I got home, I changed all fluids, cleaned the machine and took the belt housing off for a look. It was plenty dirty. I cleaned it the best I could without disassembly, (didn't take anything off, just cleaned the best I could with a toothbrush) including hosing everything off. I let it set in the sun for about an hour and put cover back on. That has been over a week ago. Now when I ride, if I am stopped in high range and give it full throttle, it will sometimes pause, them jerk like the belt is slipping, then catches and goes. This does not seem to happen in low range.
Have I damaged by belt or worse? What should I do--disassemble, clean, etc?
I thought this machine was supposed to be better than my Praire 700 and my friends Polaris 700 about belt slippage. Both machines performed better than mine that day in the water.
Thanks for your advice.

You may have damaged the belt. I would take it apart and clean it. If you look on the NYROC forum, i wrote a tech tip about how to clean the clutches in the King Quad. You will have to register to view the tech tip but it is under the tech tips for the King Quad. Along with lots of other great information.

You might want to take that cover off again and pull your primary clutch off. If you had sand and dirt in the cover, you might have some $hit in the rollers of the clutch. There's no spring in the primary, only 8 rollers that have to have their slots free of dirt so they can roll freely. If not, the sheeves wont make proper pressur on your belt on takeoff and cause slippage. Try that ,it cost less than a trip to the dealers shop.

I had the same thing happen this past weekend. Got stuck in muddy water, and the belt was slipping. I removed the plug on the bottom of the belt housing and drained the water. I was able to continue riding, but I get the slippage at start that the OP mentioned. I haven't taken anything apart yet until I could post about it and see what should be done.

I took everything off (belt, and clutch, inner housing, rollers, etc.) and cleaned it all with automotive engine degreaser, then hot water. I made sure everything was dry and put it all back. My King runs like new again. No more belt slipping. The thing was really dirty everywhere. It tokk me about three hours, but it was worth it.
Thanks for the advise.

Most of the time you can pull the plug spray with a hose to get the dirt out and leave open to dry. While on the trail pull the plug, tilt back and forth, rev a little bit to air it out before riding. After this take it slow...the last thing you want to do is burn up the belt.
The KQ is one of the worst machines for taking on water in the belt housing. So if you want to ride without any worries snorkel that baby! You should be able to get by with just doing the belt exhaust which lucky for us is very easy. I did mine in about 15 minutes.

Do you mean spray up through the plug, or down the intake? How did you do the snorkel, was it an aftermarket kit or homemade? If you have any links they would be appreciated. I am convinced the water came in from the rear of the quad. My front end was still up pretty high, but the rear was way under. I was already considering a snorkel for the air intake.
