KQ stumbles when cold
#1
I've recently been having a problem with my '05 KQ. It starts right up and idles perfectly, like always, and it'll run fine for about the first 50 ft, then it'll stumble like it's gonna quit like its running out of gas. It will do this once, sometimes twice and then it's ok and after it's warmed up it doesn't do it at all. It always used to run fine cold or warmed up. This is summer temps it does this too. I got 4300 miles on it and the only mods I've done is put the Twin Air filter on and remove the rubber snorkel. And it didn't start doing this right after that either, it just kinda started acting this way lately. Any ideas?? Thanks for your help! Wayne

whens the last time you checked valve clearance, or cleaned the carb ? It could be the spark arrester need's cleaning try that first if it doesn't help check the valves and there's a product called seafoam you can get it at auto parts stores like auto zone, advance, o'reilly's you put some in fuel tank and remove your air filter pour some in the carb start it up and let it burn it out. then pour some more in carb and let it set at least 30 minutes then replace air filter start engine, it really work's cleans carb carbon buildup on valves and combustion chamber I didn't believe it would work as good as it does untill my brother bought some for his 96' wolverine and also a boat motor that has old gas mix had gelled up the fuel lines and carbs. It work's on all types of engine's 2 stroke and four strokes and it's only $5.00 plus tax, if the spark arrester cleaning and valves clearance's are with in spec's try the seafoam...............worth a try.........williebee

Thanks, I'll give it a try, I'll change the plug and clean the spark arrestor. I've only had the valve clearance checked after break in, it was ok then. I've noticed it backfires on deceleration from time to time, is that a sign valves need adjustment or is that normal for them? Thanks, Wayne

My 06' Arctic cat 400 has the suzuki engine, i have less than 150 miles on it; and after a simple warmup if i shut it off it will make a small pop from exhaust and it also does this after a long ride! I don't know if it's valve related i changed the oil and filter at 100 miles also cleaned air filter. But i didn't check the valve's, manual say's check valve's at 100, but my dealer said if they're not making any noise and if performance is good they were alright. If you've put over a 1000 since valve's where checked i would take a look at them David is right about the fuel rich issue and plug, when you replace the plug make sure the gap setting is correct i had a 86' honda that wouldn't run right at the factory's spec. dealer said 0.24 to 0.26 it would start and idle fine. But when you gave it the throttle it would backfire like crazy ! I opened the gap to 0.30 and it ran great, a friend of mine had the same trouble on his idenical make model and size honda he had to set his gap to 0.32 for his to run right ! I've worked on small engine's over twenty year's if the valve's are off to far between spec.'s they can and will efect engine performance so if all else fail's check those valve's ! If i.m wrong the only thing you've lost is your time ! And no disrepect to David, because i've ran into repair work that really stumped me before . But if i am right it may save you more money and a lot more time in the long run !...............williebee

Williebee,
I agree with you about checking the valves. The reason I suggested what I did first, it is a lot easier than checking the valves. I strongly suggest everyone check them at the intervals that the service manual indicates. The first one being at 100 miles and I believe the second is at 600 or 1,000 miles.
It is just easier to start with the simple and quick to check stuff and work into the harder to check items.
One of the first things the service manual tells you to do on the King it is is not running correctly , is to check the adjustment of the valves.
So, there is no disrespect taken nor intended.
Thanks

Hey guys: thanks for the replys!!! I'll get a new plug in it right away and check the valves. I kinda figured they were all probably set to run rich at the factory. there's 4,000 miles on it since I've had the valves checked, so I guess it's time! Thanks again, Wayne
