Default Z400 Big Bore Needs What?

Ok. Thinking about getting the wife a few more cc's to work with. Bike is an 04 with a pipe and a rev box.

My question is, if I went with say, an Athena bolt on kit would it do any good without other stuff like cams and a new carb?

Thanks in advance.

A carb, cams, dyna ignition, porting will all help out and make it rip. My girlfriend was really upset at selling her 03 Z400 as she was the original owner w/ her own personal things on it. I bought the DAB Racing machine already complete as it was my bro's. He regrets selling it to me this day over a year ago.. The girlfriend loves the power as it can get her out of a bad situation much easier and has forgotten about her other Z400..

I understand and agree the ultimate is to get everything.

The original question really is:

Will putting the big bore kit on the bike by itself be worth it?

I don't mind spending a few benjamins for the Mrs to have some more power but we have our limits. I don't see us deciding to put a lot of money in the bike for cams, carb, porting etc. on top of a big bore kit. At that point I think we'd have to get a 4-fiddy, which for power is nice but there's so many other negatives with doing that we probably would just stick with the Z the way it is.

Thanks!

Well just buy the piston kit like Weisco sells. The Athena kit will cost 3x as much.. I'd at least put one cam in while it's apart. You can add a carb later if you really decide you want to.. A new DID timing chain will add durabiltiy for the added power. Z400's aren't known for timing chains.. DRZ valve springs and gaskets will add some comp for some more umph and you can still run on 91 octane..

get the timing chain!!!! mine got way loose, i was lucky it didnt come off and start slapping around . my local atv shop cut about,a inch or alittle less off of my timing adjuster spring. he does it on his gncc race bike, he said it lets some of the pressure off of it.you can find yfz 39mm carbs on ebay at a desent price. 1 ended yesterday that somebody in my town had and it went for $112. i had the highs bid but i had to go to work. i bid on them all the time so i can sell them to z400 owners. thats what i run, mine was 150 off of ebay.a 440 kit,39mm carb and cdi will help out alot. drop your front sprocket 1 and you'll notice alot more torque, even on a stock bike.

to answer the original question, you will notice a difference in power not as much as going all out on it but it is an improvement over stock
I would do at least the intake cam and rejet the carb and you'll like it
