Default z400 questions

I might be picking up a used 2004 z400 with a pipe, nerfs, skids and hiper carbon wheels and it looks nice in the pictures i saw but it has a few problems....it needs new axle berrings which is nothing but more importantly the current owner told me that the engine has a crack in it by the shift lever becuase of the way his son shifts the bike which makes no sense to me and oil will leak out of it. What i was wondering is if any one has had a problem that sounds simmilar to this, and if the area where the shifter is, is part of the cases or is just a cover that i can replace.....im looking forward to picking this up because the price seems pritty good and would be a cool project but seeing how im a kawasaki person i would the kfx400 plastics bolt right up?

Cracked case from shifting??? HAHAHAH that's a new one. I'll tell ya what happened, jack-**** changed sprockets & never put the case saver back on, then when he never tightened the chain properly it came off & slapped the $hit out of the case & cracked it. Now, a VERY good welder can fix this for you or if it's only hair-line JB Weld MAY fix it.

The plastic will be a direct fit.

axle bearings run around $60 and are fairly simple to install. I had to do it last year. and like cat man said it sounds like the chain hit it

auctually i dont think he was bs ing me. i went to take a look at it and it seems that (from what i found when i looked at it and from what he told me) that while he was jumping the quad he had a bad landing and his foot came down hard on the part of the shifter that is on the shaft and because it looks like alot of the shaft is sticking out of the case alot of leverage is there and when he slammed the shifter with his foot the shaft got pushed down into the bottom of the case. I also also called the shop that built my lakota engine and they told me that the cases would need to be replaced because there is a oil line in that area and there is constiltly alot of pressure on that shaft that jb weld would not hold up to, does that sound about right to you guys? btw nice z's both of you got there....looks like you have tons of $$$ into yours mucky......also before i throw out what im paying for it what do you all think would be a fair price? Its in nice shape but deffinatly has normal scratches and wear from eveyday riding.

either mucky or cat can you anser this for me please

my friend has a kfx 400 which was from ebay(mistake) and he got it home and it didn't work but today just for the hell of it I tried pop starting it and it turned right over and started...With the electric start it will turn and turn but never fires up...it gets spark when using the electric start and just won't fire...so I took the harness and looked at it where the killswitch and start button is and all of the wires were cut and I also found that the wire that connects to the clutch was missing so what I am thinking is that the wiring from the killswitch and the clutch are causing it to not fire up as I believe there is a signal not being sent(I believe that the clutch wire is the problem) so I am going to try a harness for that section off of his z400 tom and see if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

As far as the quad that won't start: try a new battery. Sometimes with a weak battery, when you crank it over the voltage drops too much to fire the plug. It can even measure proper voltage, but not have the current capacity.

As far as that other quad, if it's got that kind of damage chances are it was beat or neglected. I know if it was my quad, it wouldn't get the chance to have two major problems at the same time. In other words, if it needed new axle bearings they would be replaced before I rode it again. And definetely the crack in the case, so it would never get the chance to have both. This says to me that he just planned on beating it for a while then getiing rid of it. I wouldn't get it unless it was real cheap. Like $1500-$2200. I don't know though, I'm pretty cheap.
