Default Newbie to LT-4WD needs some assistance

Hi Guys

I just purchesd my first quad, which is a 1993 Suzuki Quad Runner, 300CC motor.

It's in excellent shape other then a small leak from the cylinder head and a hole in the muffler.

I have a few questions about this unit.

I have no idea how the choke works, I took the carb out, but moving the choke lever did not produce any results that would enlighten me as to how to use it, would someone kindly please tell me how it works, I know on many other carburated models the choke is there only to warm up the motor, once it's warm, it is no longer required, and giving the motor the wrong mixture might cause problems, I would like to avoid these issues by learning how to use it.

Secondly.

I'm in Canada, Ontario, is there a good source for parts? I want to fix the leak from the cylinder head, and change the muffler, and I'm sure in the future there will be many other fixes. So far, I only see dealers as sources for parts, and they charge way too much.

Lastly,

I want to do an oil change on the unit, I found that I can get a FRAM oil filter model number CH6066, and from what I gather, the unit has the transmission and engine enclosed in one case, all working on the same oil, is this correct?
The cap says 10W-40, and I think I found a drain bolt in the skid plate on the bottom, but I'm not 100% sure of any of these things, could someone confirm please? Also, how much oil goes into this unit, and how can I find out if the oil level is correct? I found the little piece of clear plastic that allows you to see the oil, is that all I need to see? Is there a dipstick somehwere that i have not found yet?

Thank you very much for any information

I'm guessing maybe a broken choke linkage. If you are moving the choke lever back and forth and nothing is moving on the carb, that's what I'd check.

You are right in that the engine and tranny share tha same oil. Can't remember how much it takes. Drain is in middle of skid plate as you have already found. Fill is on the back side of the transmission housing, behind the right rear axle. The small clear glass circle is the only "dipstick". Sometimes hard to read but correct oil level is when the oil level is about 3/4 to 7/8 up on the glass.

The 300 Quad Runner (The original King Quad), is a real beast. Not very fast and not very racy but it will go anywhere.

Thanks so much for the reply Jaybee.

I just got a hold of a Clymer service maintenance and repair manual for this unit, and I checked everything out, very detailed and well documented book, I got lucky that a local parts store had it on the shelf.

I don't think the choke linkage is broken because it does have an effect on the engine while it's running, I just don't know how to use it that's all. From the manual I read that having the lever all the way down completely engages the choke. I believe this is only used for starting in very cold conditions, and then you move it up according to the temperature. All the way up completely disables the choke and that's where you want the lever when the engine warms up, is this about right?

I have yet to experiment with this since I did not even have the unit running for more the 2 minutes at a time.

One thing I did not find in the manual however is a diagram of the carb vacuum lines. The other day I pulled off the cover from the shifter levers, and I found, what looked like to me a disconnected vacuum line.

Allow me to clarify.

I counted 4 rubber hoses coming from the carb. One on the bottom which is fuel delivery, that's normal. Then there are 3 more. 2 are the same diameter and 1 is thicker. All 3 go up to the shifter levers and terminate there. The thicker one connects to a Tee along with one of the thinner ones. This leaves one of the ends of the Tee open, which means it can draw air. The second thinner hose is just sitting there.

I checked the manual, and apparently the one that was sitting alone is a breather hose, which is fine, but what about the other 2, are they also breather hoses?

If anyone could shed some light on this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanx on the compliment on this atv, I spent a long time looking for it and drove almost 4 hours to get it, but it looks like it was well worth it

You are correct on the choke operation. Can't remember all the vent lines on the carb - sold my KQ 6 years ago.
