Default 85 LT230S spark but no fire

First post on this forums so i'll start off simple, i just picked up an 85 LT230S from my brother-in-law for nothin, he said it doesnt run but shouldnt take much to get it goin again. So i pulled the plug to check if its getting spark and it does. Then i drained any gas out of the carb and tank(which there was). Put fresh gas in, and kicked it over a couple times and nothing. pulled the intake boot off of the carb to hand choke it. Still nothing, took the carb off, cleaned as much as i could out of it. That this was so oxidized that i'm suprised there's any movable parts in it at all. so i got a rebuild kit coming for that, all new jets, o-rings, and gaskets. but i figured there should still be fuel on my hand from when i hand choke the motor, but there's nothing. The main jet and pilot jet aren't plugged up at all. Could this be a valve lash issue? if the intake valve is staying closed, or just not opening far enough, it wont pull fuel/air from the carb, correct? If so, what is the valve lash supposed to be set at, any info would be great. Thanks

ok searched valve lash a little more and found that it's supposed to be .001"-.003" when the piston is at tdc. kinda noobish question, but is the valve lash how far the valve is from completely seating? if so, i have mine set where it needs to be. So i tried to kick it over, now im getting some gas on my hand when i hand choke it, but after a few kicks it backfires, and still wont start. What could this be? Thanks

it has compression, not sure how much, i'll test it in the morning, but it seems like when i kick it over, there's times where there's more compressions than at other times, mainly when it's on the exhaust stroke. The carb rebuild kit came today so i did that. put some gas in the combustion chamber, put the plug back in and nothing, no firing, but there's still spark.

found out what it is. too low of compression, 60lbs, and valves were out of adjustment. so i'll just have to do an overhaul on the other head and cylinder i've got.
