remove the air box lid ,rejet to 142.5, remove the cap on your exhost, this could get you up to 30 hp

Just keep your modifications realistic like a simple Dynojet carburetor kit with airbox modifications instructions ($70). It makes no sense to spend $1500 in performance modifications when all you would have had to spend is $500 more for a performance quad like the TRX450x which box stock will out perform any armature overly molded Z400. Incidentally I own an 07 Z400 and love what engineers designed it for without a makeover.

Changing the front sprocket will make the gearing a little more trail friendly. Cheap and easy to do.

Heres what I did to wake up a sleeping monster!
Pop off the air box lid and run with out one and clean your filter often or do what I did and add a Outwears lid cover which will keep the big stuff off and repeal water.
Add a Pro Design intake and Uni filter. It's much more secure than the stock filter which just rest against the intake.
Bump up the pilot jet from a 22.5 to a 25. Bump up the main jet from the stock 120 to a 160. No need to speed $50 on a Dyno jet kit, there junk anyway, just go to the dealer and get the OEM jets for $3 each. The stock need is fine, I've tried them all and keep going back to the stock needle.
Next add a slip on exhaust and you"ll think your on a different quad. Mine runs right next to my 450R, just want pass it. The ride is so much more comfortable than on a 450R. The Z is an awesome quad. Do these exteranl mod's and keep the oil changed and it will last forever, well almost!

500$ more for a 450? more like a grand, the z400 is only about 6000, the 450s range from about 7000-7500 and 9000 for ktm

but it is true that you cant get a 400 to be as fast everywhere as a 450 for only 1000 (that gets you maybe a full system pipe, jets, filter, cam, high compression piston?)

full pipe, jet kit, remove airbox lid to start. Thats really all you would have to do. You could drop the front sprocket 1 tooth for more response but you'll lose a little top end. I really like how it feels after i changed my front sprocket especially in trails.

I think maybe yes. As I recently had the option to buy the best race proven 450 in the world for under $5700 OTD and still on sale, ta-ta! But it just so happens that I am not a professional quad racer and the Z400 at $5175 OTD was a more practice choice and cheaper in maintenance cost in the long run. I believe the ratio is four 450 engine overhauls to one 400Z engine overhaul or 5K miles vs 20K miles.

Buying quads used doesnt count when comparing prices... 450s lose their value quicker than 400s....And predators lose their value even quicker, its just not funny how cheap they are compared 400ex's and 450s

(my prices are canadian and we get ripped off by the big 4 more than you do)

I've seen a 2005 pred TLD for 4500 and it had a pipe, filter, jets, bumper, and nerfbars. The cheapest yfz450 i've seen was 5200 and it was a bone stock 2004, cheapest 450r i've seen was a stock 2006 which needed a new frame, left a-arms, and left tires, wheels, and tie rod- it was 5000... other than that the cheapest 450r was a bone stock 2004 450r for 5500

I bet the modded tld would be much better at everything than the bone stock 2004 450r
