LT250r ????
#1
I'm looking at getting a LT250r from some guy outta the paper for $1500. Ive takin it for a test, but it seems to bog instead of hitting the power band. This guy says that it just needs new reeds.
Questions are...
1. Is this quad worth it??
2. How does it perform when it's tuned properly?
Answers and comments welcome.
Thx

how much it is worth and how it performs depends on what year it is. Also doubt it is the reeds, especially if its an 85 or 86, the reason I say that is because you have to take the cylinder off to inspect them, it wouldn't make much sense to remove the cylinder install new gaskets only to leave busted reeds in it. Probably a dirty carb if its been sitting a while or its jetted for warmer weather. Do a compression test before you buy it you can get some good info from the comp test.

Thanx URnotRoscoe! Maybe there is not enough detail in my post.. I guess more info would help eh!
it's a 1990 LT250r. He said the top end was rebuilt in 98 and 30 over. When I went to see it the bike was cold so I know he hadn't let her run before I got there.
She started up 1st shot. Brakes clutch and handeling felt fine. At idle kinda sounded like a chainsaw hitting a nail at times. and this thing was freakin LOUD!!!
However when I went to open her up she just bogged right down. That;s when buddy says he looked at the reeds and 1 had a hairline crack in it. ( he hadn't got around to fixing it)
So my questions are still as above.
Is this a good machine for trailing, racing and jumping. How accessible are parts?
What is it worth in good shape?? more than $1500 Candian?? ( remember that's about 50 cents U.S LOL)

right off if it runs i'd say it's definitely worth $1500 canadian.
the lack of power could be reeds, rings(cracked or just worn out), a bad plug, or even a sticky or non-functioning powervalve(i've had the actuator rod come disconnected once- but you can look at it through the window & see it work when the engine revs up). it could need a new top-end since the last rebuild was in '98...
but it still sounds like a very fair deal
other items to look for:
check around the front shock mounts on the frame for any cracks, that's where a friend's broke.
also check:
front & rear suspension for play(looseness in any way- side to side, up/down, etc..)
any suspension mounts for cracks,
suspension components for bent parts, or cracks in swingarm
frame(esp. underneath) for bent tubes & broken welds
steering for play(small amt is okay)
rear axle bearings for play,
air filter condition & mounting(indicates motor condition & how the owner cared for it)
coolant condition in the radiator
tranny oil...dip a piece of white paper into it (if its white/grey you have water in it, any metal shavings, etc.. is bad)
if you have the tools, do a compression check, this will tell volumes about the internal condition.

Parts are pretty easy plus it sounds like the carb could be dirty. The loudness sounds like the silencer is shot, You could replace the packing or just get a new pipe & silencer if those are old. I have an 87 that I have raced from day one and I love it. It's also pretty juiced, so you can get all kinds of mods for the LT's if your looking into racing it.

Where is this quad? I've been thinking about getting a sport quad for some time, but anytime I've seen a LT250R for sale they've always been around $2500-3000.
I've also heard that they have some strange handling quirks, but of coursse I've only heard this from people that don't like Suzukis.
Actually the reason I entered the Suzuki Forum was to ask what people thought about the LT250R, and if I should get one or not.

Cranked on first kick in the cold for $1500.00?
What are you waiting for? I'd give him 15 so fast it'd hurt! That's well worth the money. Two strokes rule. Just do a little carb work and be the man. You don't happen on deals like that around here. Does it have any accessories on it?
I'm the proud owner of an LT500r Quadzilla and love them two strokes. I absolutely, no lying,
destroyed. NO! Humiliated a 400ex and two 350xs
after they ran out ahead of me. I reeled 'em in and blew by them like they were standing still!
A lt250r is a pretty tough ride, too.
