Is is worth really fixing up an 85 lt203ge

#1. A utility just doesn't have the fun factor a sport has.
#2. Most people don't want old crap, they want new crap so they can show off to their peers. They think old=cheap and unreliable.
#3. If I advertise in the paper to sell mine, I doubt I would get all my money back out of it, n I only have just over $1000 in it. The only way I could get all the money out is if I could convince them to come n ride it. That way they could see they have just as much fun on a $1000 quad as they would a $4000 quad brand new. But no way to show that in the paper. Everybody wants r450's n such.

I don't think Sport vs Utility has anything to do with it.
Utility quads far outsell sports quads. You can just do so much more with a utility quad that they are more useful to a larger group of people. Sports quads are a niche market.
That being said, there is no way you should spend $2500 on any 230cc quad that old (utility or sport). By comparison, we are planning on selling one of our 2004 250 Ozarks for about $1800. It's in great condition. So why spend $2500 on something that is 19 years older? I wouldn't give $1000 for an 1985 230 in good condition. At that age, it's going to be too unreliable for me.

I almost agree!!
Most of us "sport" guys are in our upper 30's rebuilding these antiques, for nostalgia,(or my case the experience in itself) they were after all new when we were teens, Kinda like my pop restoring a '57 Bel Air cause it was what he wanted when he was a kid!
Putting the amount of $ and time we do makes zero sense, for an 18 year old.
We have a little more disposible income at our age as well.
Buy something newer and spend the money chasin girls instead of chasing parts!!!

I agree with PG about the nostalgia.
I think sport vs utility has everything to do with it because if he had a quadsport instead of a utility we would all be telling him to build it up and post pics! I still think there is little value to a 230 utility... Especially that old. Its not big enough for many chores, no 4x4, and no auto tranny. In the 80's the biggest thing out was a 350. We're up to 950 now with the thundercat. Those old utilities should be a dime-a-dozen.
Now the quadsport on the other hand can still compete. Its strong enough to go a fast as you care to go in a trail. It wheelies, jumps, donuts, etc just like the new ones. It weighs 315lbs or so, still lighter than almost all the new ones. There is nothing a new 250 don't have that an old 230 QS doesn't have either (except a starter and 50 extra pounds and a driveshaft - all negatives except the starter).
....And now we're getting a new class of 4x4's that handle like sports. Unless you have chores to do or need to carry lots of stuff on racks all the time, why would you want a big, heavy, hard-to-handle utility when you could be riding something plush, light, and nimble? I think the reason most people get utilities is they don't want to be stuck in the mud and/or they can only afford 1 quad per rider, so they get something that covers all facets of riding (but excels at none - except mudding). My buddy just bought a brand new 700 king quad and now, after a few months, he's shopping for an old warrior that needs fixed up. The king is just not that much fun on the trails (its a death trap if you ask me...). I think once he gets the warrior, the king will just sit in the garage with the 300 miles it has on it now.
Me,,, ironically,,, I'm shopping for a suzuki 250 4x4 with all the gears (35 forward ones I've read). But that's just because I'm a gearhead n love lots of granny gears and I have lots of chores to do that requires me to go slow and have 4x4. And I want something small and as light as possible, hence the 250cc. The 700 is a small jeep in my opinion and is always pinned between 2 trees getting stuck.

Thats the thing though i really did not want a sport nor did my parents in fear that i would kill myself. That fact that the 230ge has no back shocks is good for me to keep me from jumping it (i am very **** to getting hurt on everything i ride even a pedel bike HahA).I also love going out and getting real dirty (mudding) witch is what its good.I think this quad is good for me its my first one and i want to be a atv macanick. In the future i WILL be getting a better quad (like when im 25-30). But i think i am going to fix this one up if fun for me all the power i need. I thinking about getting a dirt bike anybody got any suggautions would be great!

Are you going to get a utility dirt bike too?
I can understand how you feel wanting to fix up your quad. Just as long as you know you'll never get the money back out of it. But, as a parent, I would have no comfort in your quad having no rear shocks!
