I'll bet money that your valves are too tight. Have your valves adjusted and you should be good to go.

You didn't need to order new valves & springs. You need a lash cap kit ( about $60-70). The Z400 engine uses a bucket shim over the stem & you use different thickness buckets to set the lash. Cancel that order of valves & springs and get yourself a lash kit ASAP!!

That's good to hear. I would say really no specific break-in time, but for sure after about 10hrs check the lash again.

You musta already had the head off when you posted before to know you had a bad valve?? Are you running a good air filter & keeping it clean?? Sounds like it had been sucking dust for awhile & hammered that valve & seat .

Ive been having the same problem as stangboy. My z400 has been sitting in storage for about 3 months, because of the cold...I tried starting it the other day and it just cranked but no start. I figured it was the spark plug so i replaced it and still nothing, same thing. Someone informed me that it may not be getting any fuel, i tested the spark plug by grounding it to the side of the cylinder head and there was a spark...i threw a spray of starting fluid in the carburatur but still the same thing. Ive read on local forums that the z400's have cheap stock valves in them. I havent checked the compression on it yet but i will tomorrow...what should i be looking for and what do i do if the compression is low? I need a quick fix just to sell it, if there is one. Thanks for anyones help!
