LT160 timing chain replacement
I have a suzuki lt160 e and had the valves replaced. we rode the bike for approx 2mi and it died. brought it home found the timing chain broke. this is my kids bike and its in preety rough shape but it had always ran good. How do you replace the timing chain. I am not worried about taking it apart, but would like some tips. do i have to split the case. any info would be helpful.

going by some microfiche, it looks like the valvetrain is very similar to an lt230's.
with that said, you should be able to get away with taking off the left sidecover, flywheel, stator, and the rocker cover and sneaking things around inside by first backing the cam chain tensioner off all the way (or even better, just take it off, 2x 10mm bolts), then slipping the new chain around the crank, and pulling it up thru the cylinder and head with a bent coathanger hooked on a link. make sure to check for any broken guides.
as far as timing goes, if its anything like a 230, find tdc @ the crank by lining up the flywheel score line with the pointy looking thing protruding towards the crank from the sealing surface of the left sidecover, and then put the cam gear on with the drive pin between 11 and 12 o'clock and the two lines on the cam are level with the top sealing surface of the head.
i THINK its possible to do this with the engine in the bike, but its a WAY MORE PLEASANT EXPIRIENCE when the motor's on a bench, and it isnt very hard to pull these motors anyways.
good luck!
