There is always going to be some blowhard idiot who claims they can run 27s on a 400cc engine and pull wheelies and roost mud....the truth is a bit different.
The short answer is that you could try it, but you would lose a lot of your low end torque with a tire that tall...if you don't plan on leaving the pavement, 27's will be okay (some people do this) but as soon as you get in any substantial mud or a situation where you need your engine to be able to effectively turn the tire, you will be sorely disappointed.
I run 26" MudLites on my 500 Vinson with no problem, but I ride in really nasty places and need all the low end I can get

I run 26" 589's with no prob. I ride in really sticky florida mud. Have a auto Eiger and in low it will spin them with no problem. They don't rub at all. Not sure if 27's would rub or not but I would get them if they didn't.
