HOWEVER...and not to panic MNDNR (?)...that submarine test was done in a gravel bottomed stocktank on my family's 430 acre ranch, not public wetlands, and I guarantee the herd of cows we have on the place mess it up a lot worse during one of their group swim/crap sessions than I ever could.

We never had complaints from neighbors about the noise, but then we didn't run loud exhausts either...so I guess the question is whether there were no complaints because no one cared, or there were no complaints because there weren't loud pipes making noise to complain about.

If it seemed I was "lashing out" I apologize, but the noise issue is an issue that is more important to all of us than most of us seem to realize. We have to change our old ways of thinking and be more responsible for ourselves and our public image than ever before, or we will be our own undoing.

I guess the issue about noise is that you never know who is going to be offended by it until after the offending has taken place...then what do you do? Has the neighbor said something right after the first noisy ride, or have they tolerated it until they couldn't stand anymore before they said something? And then, is the rider going to then buy another pipe for a couple of hundred dollars or more, or blow it off and ride anyway until the sheriff or process server shows up?

Why not save us all the hassle to begin with and get something that doesn't have "loud" as a characteristic or in it's description?
I understand what you're saying, and I agree, don't get me wrong. All I was trying to say is lets not assume he doesn't own a 1000 acres of land where no one will ever even know he has a four wheeler, much less hear it.

I know noise is an issue and prefer quiet pipes (~96dB or less) myself.

The frustrating fact of the matter is that there's three exhaust systems you can buy new for this wheeler, and all of them are megaphone style, and not on the quiet side of things.

Oh, and the MNDNR is the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the woods police.

I live in mass and where I ride nobody cares how loud it is, I can also blow by the environmental police cars going 60 in my quad and they dont give a damn. Not everybody cares how loud it is most people are riding in the woods anyway.

Noise isn't really an issue in my area, but there are a few residential areas that we have to ride past to get from trail to trail and im sure they wouldnt want to hear something loud driving past their house all the time. Heres the problem though, My quad doesnt offer very many options in the exhaust catagory. So im kinda limited. I posted a question about rims earlier in this thread that i could use some help with.

Joker-

Just a thought, but have you given thought to making your own system? I have no idea whether it is feasible, but maybe get a performance muffler for a 250, and get a muffler shop to make a section of exhaust to fit the stock pipe up to the aftermarket can?

Which ones you looking at? The Holeshot HDs on my DVX, or the Kenda Klaw XCs on my 230?

Both are great. The Klaws made it a little tough to powerslide on the 230, but that's kinda just how the 230 is.

I bought the HD tires, just had to cut the rims off of the old tires last night, what a pain. It took 3 guys 4 hours to get 2 tires off. Then trying to mount the HDs was even tougher. So now i've decided to bite the bullet and bring them to a shop to get mounted, but the shop is really expensive, they want 30 bucks a tire to mount and if they couldn't get the old tires off the rims in 20 minutes they charge 70 bucks an hour on top of their original 30 bucks each tire. Thats why i tackled gettin the old tires off myself. And as far as making an exhaust system i didn't know that was an option. I dont really know much about exhausts. Any suggestions?

Yeah, ATV tires are a PIA to change. You should shop around a bit, I found a shop, discount tire I think, to change 2 of them for $30, removal and installation.

The HD tires are great. They bite super hard and ride nice IMO.

Making your own exhaust is possible, but you'll need things like a welder and various other tools. JustRandy in the big 230 forum hollowed out an old truck driveshaft and used that for one he made.

Personally, I'd just buy one of the available ones. It's easy enough to keep the wheeler quiet in low RPMs to get past the neighbors.

I've got the old muffler off my stock systme if you just want to replace yours. I cut it off, and bought a Jardine Sonic Core Stret Bike muffler off ebay, and adapted it to fit my pipe. Looks and sounds good! I traded Lootin Lenny his stock pipe for my DG since it was so damn loud I could hardly stand to ride it.
