87 230 Quadsport leaking oil bad
#1
I was ridin the other day, until i head a crack noise, and the drive chain fell off. I put it back on, only to notice my entire leg covered in hot oil. Then i looked down at my oil level and it was gone, so I killed the quad, and had it towed back.Is there supposed to be a cover or something over the front sprocket? And there is a rolly thing on the frame, but with noting on it? But if I pour oil in it and start it up, oil just pisses out the bottom really fast. Hopefully you guys can help me figure out what the problem seems to be and what parts I need. Thanks alot guys.

sounds to me like you might have cracked your case when ur chain came off.
That happened to me and i lost all of my oil. Look around the small sprocket on your engine and see if you can see a gap in the left case cover and the engine housing. It could have shifted or gotten a gash in it or something when the chain popped.
Check your chain tension... make sure when you sit on the bike that it has about 1"-1 1/2" of play in the chain. If you need to adjust it, I can tell ya... but that is what it sounds like to me... Make sure ur sprockets aren't worn... Have you figured out why the chain popped off?
Good luck man!

dbrev42, I had the same problem. If it is what it sounds like, you'll need to replace the entire cover commonly refered to as a Magneto Cover. There are ways to sometimes fix the cover depending on the damage and use it again since there is no oil pressure inside the area where the cover is mounted. Here are a few shots I took of mine to see if we are talking about the same area.
Here is my engine (currently undergoing a restoration)

Here is the area you need to worry about when your chain pops off. If it comes off at the right angle and speed, it will crush the aluminum cover and you'll be dead in the water. They make chain guards and cover protectors for this area. Just google it and you should find plenty. (this is a replacement cover and it already has been hit by the chain a few times.)

Here is an old cover of mine I replaced not too long ago. Notice the chewed up area of the cover. When the chain comes off, it sometimes breaks the bolt off too and you find yourself having to drill out a broke off bolt out of the engine block. (long and bad day)

If you find yourself reusing the old cover, remember to check the outside and the inside for cracks and damage. You don't want to have to replace this cover too many times. Its a factory item that costs about $200.00 depending on where you go.

Hope this helps narrow down the search man. Let us know.

ya man, no problem... those pics are great Chaz! dbrev, I wouldn't rush out and drop $200 on a left side cover... i had mine welded at a shop, and it looks brand new!!! it was only like $60 or so, and I haven't had problems since, with a ton of gasket sealer to go with just as insurance. If the crack isn't that bad, i would consider that first, or JB Weld, if that doesn't hold or the problem persists/gets worse, then I would try to find one on Ebay for maybe $150 or so.
Good luck!!!!

I had a 250S same thing happened to me TWICE!. Mine was welded by my girls uncle for a 24 pack of Carona haha and held up just fine. Try Al's snomobile in vermont they have a web site where you can search for used parts I bought a used case for $90 form them the 1st time and has that welded the 2nd time.

That reminds me, if you shop around, you can probably find an entire engine for half the price of the part you need to replace. Then when/if something else goes wrong, you got spare parts on hand! And if not, well, you can always part it out for some extra aftermarket funds....lol.
