Default Ticking coming from rockers?

Ok so I'm checking the timing just to make sure what to double check for on timing. I had all the lines lined up when I rebuilt. the piston all the way to the top (top dead center) and the timing chain sproket lined up like vault shows, I just did a quick check on the rockers when building, But I think thats were I found the ticking is coming from. So now I have the 2 caps off and wanted to know with the pistion all the way to the top and spark plug out I have found that nether side have any play, But it runs good I just get that ticking at low idle and a back fire one time when iding low. Should that fix the ticking and the back fire i'm getting once I have it gaped right?

Adjust your valves.
Should be done with cold engine.
Back firing through carb indicates intake valve not closing tight ,
or exhaust valve not sealing or opening too early if backfiring out the pipe.
Remove inspection covers turn motor over by hand a few times double check timing marks.
Valves will only have slack in them every other time the piston is at TDC.

Valve clearances are in the the vault if you don't already have a manual.
.001-.003 - Intake
.003-.005 - Exhaust
