ITs cast, so its very hard to weld on cast properly. I asked a welder at work and he just laughed. I suppose you could probably braize on some metal, but Im no welder.

Heres a pic of my enigne casing near the sprocket. This is a repair a previous owner completed and most of it fell off. Im going to attempt a better repair, but I eventually want to replace the casing itself.
I dropped off my cylinder today to get bored for a 67mm piston. I require a full head rebuild (valves were worn) and my cam is flaking chrome, so I need to replace that too. Theres a little play in the rod aswell, but thats why Im only going to 67mm piston because I know its not going to last, and I dont have the time to send the crank away to get repaired. This baby needs to roll by mid july.

Hey I don't know what it is like there in Canada, but I rebuilt a crank last year. I bought a Hot Rod from Ebay, about $110, and had a guy from the local shop balance it for $40. It took about a week total. I do know putting the rest of the engine together sometimes takes longer, but you wouldn't have to worry about it later.
The lower ends like to blow apart when you rebuild the top end. So if the rod and bearings are loose you might get lucky, but you could be cutting it close.
Just some advice. I've been there.

I can order the cover from the local dealer for under $100.
and my mechanic/engineer made me a steel case saver, after we replaced the cover for the second time.
As for the design of the case saver it worked great and saved my butt saturday.
while climbing a nasty steep hill i snapped the chain and came downhill backwards and fast.
At least when i hit the bottom the only damage was bent handlebars and the snapped chain of course.
Anyone interested in a case saver or cover weld job let me know i can set you up with the mechanic. He made a jig to line up the case and weld it properly.

You could get all that welded for like $100. Or you could do what I did and I took my center cases to a welding class at a trade school and they normally either do it really cheap, like $10 or for free. The way I figured is if they do a bad weld, I haven't lost anything because I was planning on getting new cases anyway, but since they did a good weld, I am going to use my old case since its from the 250s and it has a couple upgrades to it from the 230s.
