Default Novice - Please Help

Hi everyone,

Finally after wanting an ATV for years I can say I own one. I bought a 2007 Suzuki Eiger 400 Quadrunner with low mileage and am loving it!

I have two questions and am hoping you can help. Or, reassure more than anything.

Tonight I was riding it, temperature was about 4c and when I stopped and turned off the bike I had the parking break on, shifted to neutral like I normally do and then turned off the ignition. My hand was a little cold and accidently immediately turned the ignition switch back on and I could hear it running again and then I turned it off like I had originally intended too.

Did I do any damage by accidently doing that?

When I turned the bike off after accidently turning the ignition back on I heard one after fire pop, not overly loud.

Did any of this harm or damage my bike?

Does afterfire damage the engine or bike?

Silly me should have been more careful but my hand was just a little cold and it was an accident.

Thanks in advance for answering and Happy Thanksgiving to all of those in the United States who read this.

Thanks

I wouldn't sweat it. I also wouldn't make it a habit though.

You just cut the spark from the ignition when you turned the key off, then before the engine stopped by turning the key back on the spark ignited the built up gas in the cylinder and in the exhaust causing the back firing.. Shouldn't have hurt it any,but try not to do it again. As young punks we used to do our old cars like this to wake up neighborhoods late at night. I'm getting paid back by listening to young punks and their sub woofers late at night now.. Karma

Thank you for the reply.

What harm could this do just so I know for my knowledge? I am a true novice and am almost terrified of damaging or hurting my bike.

Could it have damaged a critical part of my bike? As in costly?

Thanks again for replying.

You can sleep peaceful tonight knowing that all you did was just blow any cobwebs out of your exhaust..If this was a genuine ignition problem to where back firing was a constant issue, then over time you could damage a piston crown or perhaps a valve.. Again don't sweat the small stuff. Speaking of sleep...yawn..this old man is about ready to take a nap..

Based on my research replacing a piston crown or valve is fairly inexpensive so if this is the worst that could he happened I feel better. Much better.
