ltz400 starter spins free doesnt catch

Default ltz400 starter spins free doesnt catch
04 dvx400 the starter stopped working, now it just spins free, and doesn't catch/engage. the starter clutch or the starter/idle gear?

More than likely it's the starter clutch...That's what usually fails.

I found that my starter/idle gear has fallen apart. have one on order. will update when it arrives fingers crossed that is the only problem, cheap easy fix

Hopefully that will fix it...and an idler is a lot less $$$ than a starter clutch.....

it was just the starter gear. put new one in, replaced the cover with the three bolts and she started right up. happy
