I developed a tapping in the engine after 1200 miles. The shop says I ran it hot by running it in low gear alot. I say "I don't think so". They are in the process of rebuilding part of the engine. The problem is, I don't know what went wrong with it. I kept it maintained and was not that rough with it. Any ideas why it might have done this?

Your probably getting ripped off cuz that is a buncha bull****. What part of the engine? Tell me some details. The problem is probably piston slap or valves. A clicking from the top of the engine means the valves need adjusted and thats just regular maintence. Just tell us what part of the engine and then we can see what caused it.

It is from the top. They adjusted the valves but it did not adjust out. They said when they pressed on the piston with their finger, the piston went down real easily. Not supposed to do that? Anyway, it is all under warranty so they are not getting money out of me...

Rocker arms and cam?? thats what happened to my 300ex after someone stole it and rev'd it like there was no tomorrow. You usally don't loose too much performance ( i didn't atleast) and it will make a terrible "tapping" or "ticking" noise.

If they pressed on the piston with their finger then obviously the head was off, thus, no compression and the piston should move down easily. I think you're being hosed on this. Tapping sounds in the valve-train are not unusual and could be several things. Run a leakdown test on it (the dealer should have done this directly after pulling the plug) and if that turns out good check the valve clearance. If all that goes well then just rock and roll with it. A good dealer would charge nothing for the leak-down test.

So what is the fix for this. I'm going to see these idiots today. I WAS planning on buying a quad master, but these folks can forget me buying it from them. It may be under warranty but that is no excuse for bad service...
