250X and Quadracer 250????
#2
250X probably has a little more torque below 4000 RPM's but the 88-92 quadracer 250 has gobs more torque than a 250R, I had a quadsport 230 before my quadracer, and the quadracer is a much better woods quad. The 250X is a good first sport quad but you will probably get bored with it.
I think the 250X had like 18HP, the 88-92 QR has about 28-30 stock, although most around now with decent reeds and a pipe are closer to 35HP

Definately get the quadracer. The two stroke is easier to work on and has a lot more power. It might not last as long or be as reliable as the 250X though, but in a few months when you want more power from the 250X, you will have wished that you had gotten the LT250R.

Word.
My first quad back in the 80's was an LT230, which I traded in for a brandy-new 250X back in 1992. It was an ULTRA-reliable quad, as I had it for 8 years without a SINGLE problem. But, as the other guy said, I eventually got bored with it, and traded in for a moderately more powerful 400EX. Now I have an arm-pulling 416EX.
Anyhew. 250X's top at around 57MPH, LT250R's probably closer to 65MPH. If you want ANY kind of real performance, go with the LT250R, but be ready to spend some $$$ on it, and be prepared to be taken by modded 400EX's like mine...

As long as you don't get one of those whimpy 400-440 EX's, you will be all set, everyone knows that even if you could get a little bit of extra power out of a 416EX, most of the people who own them can't ride, and have no endurance. You will be very happy with a LT250R as I blow away 416 EX's all day long, on a race course.
