Zila gearing

Hey people,
what gearing are you all running on your zillas? I had a 41 tooth rear before the rebuild, and i just installed a 38 tooth rear, just to get that torque workin for me. Let me know what you think [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img] later

I'm runnin' 14/38 gearing on mine. I have had the 42 on the rear, btu changed in to the 38. I've run a couple of different countersprockets, I even got a 15 tooth for it but it runs really close to the swingarm so I haven't tried it. Don't want to bust any cases right now.

I have 14/42 right now. I had 13/42 this summer when riding in the woods which is slow riding. I went to San Felipe this past weekend and put the 14 on for more high speed since I wasn't going to be going slow at all.
For the dunes in a few weeks, I will put on my new 40 rear and leave the 14 on the front. This should only give me a 4.4 mph increase. I can pull third up olds with my 22" paddles and 14/40 gearing but not fourth.

Different years had different stock gearing, my 87 was running a 13/41. I just recently put a 14 in the front with the 41 in the back, that's with 22" tires and with the 500 motor stock or otherwise there is no problems with it's get up and go.
I do know on mine that the 14 is the largest I can go in the front, and I even had the grind down the case saver to get it to fit. 15 would be too large.

Well i just tried the 38 on the back....and damn she moves now! I was changing gears alot before, but now the power is much more useful throughout the range. Before i was wheel spinning everywhere!(not a bad thing unless your tryin to go fast!) but now the power just drives into the sand. I still have the original pipe on it, and also i just put in a new set of standard reed valves ($12!). It seems the bike doesnt want to rev out? it gets to wat sounds like around mid range then holds there. but it has s$#tloads of bottom end power. Wat do u guys suggest? Wats the best pipe for improving mid to top? Will aftermarket reed valves improve this? Thanks people [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

I'm sure you are going to get several different opinions when it comes to after market components, and just about everyone of them will be correct.
So here is the "stuff" I run on my 87 Zilla:
- FMF gold series pipe
- Answer pro series muff (soon to be changed to FMF power core)
- Boyseen reeds
- K&N filter
- Re-jetted main, and dropped the needle jet down 1 notch (this is specific to my altitude)
I have other engine modifications, but the above was being run before the engine mods occured, and it ran like the proverbial raped ape. One of the most important things to remember is the proper carb jetting once you start changing engine parts, becuase if done wrong your looking at engine replacement. Good luck!

FMF Gold Series pipe and FMF Silencer, but everyone else one here prefers the Paul Turner pipe over FMF's so that is what I'm gonna get next. I would also like to get a carb that I don't have to mess with every time I ride.

I've never had any problems with the adjustments on my carb, once in a great while I have to reset the idle screw (due to vibrations), but other than that no problems. The one thing that I did due that I would highly recommend is after my complete rebuild I had the carb bored and extra mm, the difference is amazing.

I've had an 87 and now a 90 zilla and have had just about every gearing combonation possible, normally I run 14/37 with my 18's and occassionally for extreme top speed with zero acceleration or practility i bolt up a 28 tooth rear from sprocket Specialties, they have good quality, and inexpensive sprockets. For the rear zilla they make from 28-72 teeth!!
