Here's my situation: I'm 15, and starting to get serious about MX, but the only thing that keeps me from being able to ride with the best at my track is the fact that my race quad serves double duty as a trail quad, making so I cannot widden/lower it without a hassle. So I have decided to mod my 416ex full out for mx, and get another quad for the woods, and the first one that came to mind is an 87-92 Lt250r. For some reason, I have always been overly fond of quadracers, an this is what I have set in my mind to get. So, I have a few questions.

1. How are quadracers for the woods/hills? Is there a good front/rear weight bias for hills? I already know how there power is, and i'm quite happy with it.

2. What is the wheel bolt pattern for these year QR's?

3. What type of oil do you guy's run? At what ratio? I'm planning on Maxima K-2, is this a good quality oil?

4. How are they at jumping? I don't mean serious MX, but I will at one time or another have it at the track or some play jumps just to mess around on.

5. What do I look for when I go to buy one? Any special high pressure places in the frame (typically around the a-arms, swingarm pivot, ect...)

1. they are very fast at low speed winding tracks and also open flat out tracks. our 250 is very very fast through the woods. Hill climbing shouldnt be a problem at all.
2.not sure of the actual size but they are 5 stud.
3. We run 32:1 and we use Castrol TTS. runs very clean. I run Silkalene in my Zilla at 32:1.
4.the LT seems very predictable over jumps. Ive landed some very awkward take-offs and with a bit of a twist the bike is very easy to jump.
5. I would go over the swingarm with a fine toothed comb. Check it all over and look for cracks. Other than that check all a arm bearings and swingarm bearings, and check the chassis under the engine.

1. They have aolt more weight over the front tires than a 400ex. Good for hill climbing and turning, not that good on whooops or big jumps.
2. 5 on 130mm bolt circle.
3.Bel-Ray MC-1 50:1(synthetic)
4.Once you overcome the heavy front end, They are sweet! I take mine to the track all the time.
5.Try to buy 88-92' The frames and swinarm are stronger, and they have exhaust valves. Most of the suspension bearings are rusted unless you are smart like me and add grease zerks!.

1. in stock width they are killer woods machines, great hill climbers.
2. rear: 5 on 130mm, 10mm studs. front: 4 on 166mm, 8mm studs.
3. i've run a few different oils all with good results... started with dumonde tech, went to mobil 1 full synthetic, now running maxima super M... all at 40:1. i like the results from the super-M so far. mobil was great but kind-of expensive.
4. at play jumping they do fine, a set of works shocks will do wonders to help as well.
5. around the a-arms, upper shock mounts, foot peg mounts, top steering shaft clamp area, & swingarm.

i have a '91 my brother a '90, after studying them closely i found that the '91-92 have additional gussets in some locations in the front suspension, and a better rear suspension(like a 250r or current MX bike) however...

the only disadvantage the '91-92 has is that you have to run the stock airbox(limited space around carb), vs. the '87-90 you can put a K&N w/ outerwears directly on the carb & take out the airbox (works great with a rad valve... very rigid)... my brother has done this and likes the results.

the '87 i'd stay clear of, less aftermarket parts are available for the engine: the cylinder, reed block and porting are slightly different from the '88-92.

as for greese zerks, i put aftermarket +2 A-arms on, and they came with zerks and poly bushings,i put a rad axle carier w/ zerk too.... on the rear suspension look for bad swingarm pivots & linkage(feel for play), i've had to do 2 sets of pivot bearings, also look for damage due to a chain break or coming off sprockets.

You can run Uni-Filters directly on the crab on the 92's. But I am guessing you don't wanna do that since you will probably be going through some sort of water if it is a trail bike. If the quad was just rebuilt, make sure you know the person did it right, because my frineds mom bought a 92, was supposedly just rebuilt(top end) and 5 hours later the crank bent because the piston was installed wrong. $1000 dollars later it was running, only to fry the clutch in about 6 months. So just be careful when buying anything used.

I was really wanting to sell it only because I couldn't find a job. But now I think I found one, and can afford to build a TT/Flat Track racer out of the 500, and buy a MX quad. Did you get all the bugs worked out of your Zilla? How do you like yours in the Flat Track, how does it do compared to big bore 250R's and Banshee's and stuff.

Wel mine handles like a dream. very predictable but tyre choice is all important. I explained in another post that mine didnt start for my first race so i havent raced it yet. but there was one LT500r out in the field racing against one fully modded 250r, modded banshees and alike. It won easily. he was short shifting coming past where we were standing and he still pulled two bike lengths on the two banshees behind him on the straights. U could tell he was just toyin with them to keep it interesting hehe. The 500 will not disappoint. Just wait to find a job but dont sell the zilla. trust me [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

My zilla had one bug....me fiddling with the carby. I had the needle jet too high and it flooded everytime it started. Now its running sweet and im a little wiser for it [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]
