Zilla performance mods
#1
I was just wondering what everyones mods are and if anyone had put thier zilla on a dyno. I just took my 89 bone stock zilla to a local performance shop and told them to have fun and do whatever he wanted to just make it as potent as he could wthout sacraficing reliability too much and i was just wondering what i could expect. The mods we discussed were a cool head, porting, duncan racing pipe silencer and air box,a bigger carb, kevlar cluth plates, rad valve, tcs shocks front and rear, and a durablue axle. I was also wondering what kind of tires i should put on it. i ride mostly in old strip pits where there is just a lot of loose stuff that offers poor traction and a lot of trails. I run pure sports bandit xcs front and rear on my 400ex and raptor but dont think they will offer enough traction for the zilla. Also does anyone know if the carbon fiber rims that were featured in one of the mags are available yet?

By Duncan Racing pipe I think your referring to thr Paul Turner that they distribute. I've heard great reviews about that pipe. The combo you mentioned is pretty good, a Keihin 39mm PWK will probably work best. Don't shave the head or increase compression or you will have reliability problems.
I have Maxxis Alltraks 21 X 11 X 10 on my Zilla out here in Vegas where it gets real loose and I love them. Realtors are kind of like a paddle tire for loose gravel and they are tough but also heavy. Some riders like them but I haven't used them yet. Holeshot XCT are 6 ply but the tread pattern on the rears may be too close to hook up like the Alltraks.
When you get it all together, post again with some feedback. I'm contemplating the same set-up.
Good luck.

yes your right i was referring to the paul turner pipe and silencer and do not plan upping the compression any (its already hard enough to kick lol) also i'll check out the all tracs. i have already been considering the realtors too because toughness is realy important there are lots of sharp rocks and stuff where we ride. thanks for the suggestions im expecting to get it back anytime now its been in the shop for 6 weeks already but around here its hard to find anyone that does quality work so i had to either choose to be patient and let it get done right or risk getting a faster job done and sacrafice quality.

My zilla has just gone through a rebuild. I was thinking of getting the port work done but i was told that its already been extensively ported! I had a look inside the inlet before i put my reed cage in and you can see the porting! looks real nice too. I also assumed that the exhaust was stock but again i was told otherwise. Apparently its a 'Proline' or something like that. It looks very stock to me! But i did notice it was very light. Im not sure if the compression has been changed but i do know that its a Wiseco Pro-lite kit inside it. And the compression is enuf to thro me over the bars and i weigh 182lbs (83kg). This thing is ultra reliable when i dont mess with the carby! and runs absolutely great. Ill still never beleive that stuff about the '87 engine bein a big problem engine. a bit of work and its as good if not better than the later years. This bike will go with me to the grave... I have A PTR "National" kit on mine. I run the PTR silencer too. I love it It has more power than one man would ever need. I just put shredders on my zilla and I like them so far. I ride strip mines and shale pits but haven't been there yet with the new tires so I can't honestly say how they will work there.

I just had my Zilla motor completely rebuilt a few months ago, with a mild port job and I had it re-sleeved, with a Wiseco piston and a Hot Rod. I was going to throw a cool head on it, but the original head was matched to the cylinder and I have yet to have any problems with it, so I thought "why mess with it". I am also running the stock Mikuni 39mm carb that was bored 1mm larger, hooked to a K&N and pre-filter (no air box). I am still running the old Showa shocks (of course they have been rebuilt and re-valved), I realize they're no TCS, Works, or PEPS, but they are still decent enough shocks and they can still take a pretty good hit without bottoming out. It also has an FMF Gold series pipe w/answer pro series silencer, and Boyesen reeds. I also run a pair of Shredders (22-11-10) on the back, they hook up pretty good. This thing screams, I have yet to get this monster to full speed, the front end tends to get light and twitchy, of course everything around me becomes a blur. I know they say that the Zilla's had some reliability problems specially the 87 models, but I just haven't seen it. I would like to get mine on a dyno just to see what this thing has.
