z400 performance at dumont dunes
#1
I took out the z today with a set of scatrak 8 paddle edges. I also took out my 400 ex with an exhaust, k&n, rev, and jet kit, front sprocket dropped one tooth (sorry no paddles, I stole them for my Z).
The conditions were very soft so the honda was at a big disadvantage. At the wall the z ran away from it, can't get third gear yet, but 2nd gear was plenty fast for the honda. With an exhaust and some more breathing room that next gear is going to scream.
Personally I think it is geared to tall for the dunes. It wasn't pulling real strong on the flat lands in 5th gear and 1st gear went to fast for my taste. I found myself using 1st gear to creep up different areas of the dunes. I would rather be using 2nd for that, but that is any easy sprocket fix.
As a previous owner of a tricked out banshee, I can't believe how well this thing handles. I know the banshees are crap for handling, but the z is just awesome. It also rips over my 400ex ( which I used to think was the ultimate handling quad) I love the narrowness of the seat, it feels more like a motorcycle rather than a lazyboy style quad. You don't realize how great it is until you spend some time on both bikes. I have no interest under any conditions to ride my 400 ex anymore.
By the way guys the reverse is awesome for your ladies who actually get stuck in the dunes. Nothing worse that having to get off your bike becuase they are too week. Doesn't get much better.

I have tried the edges on my 400ex and they are nice. However my choice would be the sand skate II's much more durable, good bite, and very light. I also had some sand sharks but found them to be way to heavy, and the paddles were to small for my liking.
