Everytime I go to clean the air filter on my Fiance's Z400 i think of my old LT500 and how crappy this airfilter design is. Does anyone agree with me? I think i am going to make a plate out of aluminumn and put on a clamp on filter. Its better than a stock Raptor set up but if its like the 500 The air box will warp over time causing leaks. What do you guys think?

team alba racing has a trick aluminum piece that bolts to the airbox so you can put aftermarket filters on it and they also have k and N air filters

I was going to buy the setup that Alba was advertising. It looks cool and I think K&N air filters are so much easier to clean as long as you buy their cleaning solution and filter oil. That stock one sucks in my opinion, the first time that I cleaned it with No Toil the filter was all discolored like it was dirty but I had just cleaned it. I hate the idea of an oil seal and a plastic hat type of thing holding the air cleaner on. The Alba aluminum adapter for the K&N looks sweet and it might just be the ticket.

I agree, it sucks. It is very dusty here, I have nightmares every time I get behind someone.

Aproy, how much is the aluminum adapter? How does it install?

I thought K&N filters were "paper" filters? How do you clean a paper filter? (you don't as far as I know). I thought the K&N had to have a sock over it, and the "sock" is what you clean?

Educate me!!!

Later...

A K&N is a cotton gauze sanwiched between wire mesh, the gauze holds the oil, and is sprayed with a cleaning solution to loosen the oil, then you carefully wash it out under running water. after letting it dry,you spray K&N oil (not foam filter oil) on it, make sure it is even, install, and you are ready to ride again.
The aluminum adapters run about 90 bucks with a filter,it is a flange that fits where the filter was, then you drill a couple of holes and bolt it in place, then from then on, you just clamp the filter on,much easier, and seals a lot better.

AMEN! My setup from Alba should be arriving today. I got the aluminum piece, filter and outerwears for when I get a pipe and actually lose the lid. I so cannot wait. It's funny. I am getting extra's (skids, filter, etc.) so all my stock pieces become extra's for my girl's bike. I can't wait. This bike is so sweet.

I got my stuff from Alba yesterday. One thing to be carefull of, is that the filter fits OVER the aluminum adapter, then a band clamps around that to hold it in place. With a setup where the filter goes on the outside, the rubber will eventually dimple from the pressure of the clamp, and pass air. Keep a close eye on this!!!! This has given me fits on the 300EX and also my truck. Don't overtighten the band, as it will make it worse. Just make it snug enough to seal everything.
