I was told by a friend that a King quad pulled his dad's large moose out of the swamp that he shot it in. At the time I found this hard to believe seeing that it only has 280cc. But then again it does have a 3 range sub-transmission.Is the King really that good at towing?

I owned a 87 KQ and a 97 KQ.With the three sub trannys on this quad,it is very good at pulling. It will pull allmost anything you can throw at it.It is geared very low in the super low tranny range, therefore you can expect to be going extremly slow in that range.I'd never buy another one,ONLY because the bigger cc quads really get up and haul some *** compared to this midget. The King Quad is also very reliable. The Drum style brakes are of poor design and quality.Stay out of the serious mud with this quad, your brakes will be ok.The stock tires suck.Installing either Vampires or Mudrunners will cure that. Both the KQs were good to me,just way underpowered when comparing them to the larger cc 4x4s.I realize that huge engine CCs are not for everyone.====BILL

r34,My only real concern was how far I could travel on the oil injection before it ran out.I trail ride alot and the 5 gallon tank on the Sportsman was good for around a hundred miles. The Xplorer?I wish I had bought it first. The 2 stroke motor response is awesume. This is one great hill climber to.I can go around 350-400 miles on the injection oil before needing a refill. The Xplorer is 110 lbs lighter than my 99 Sportsman, and that is very noticable. All in ALL,I think im happier with the Xplorer.===BILL

Bill......
I am currently helping a friend rebuild his 95 400 Xplorer.
It seems that the injector either quit altogether, or was not injecting the right amount of oil, regardless, the engine quit with a bang.
Upon taking it apart, half of the piston was missing.
As a result, a new piston, rings, crank grind, bearings, and a cylinder bore, came to the tune of $ 700.00.
He found out that the machine should use 25:1, or 3/4 of a quart to a tank of fuel.
Needless to say, the injector is being replaced by a steel plate (cause he does'nt trust it anymore) and choose to do the mixing himself.

While I wouldn't recommend this - here is what a KQ can do. I use my '94 in my construction business. We needed to move our dump trailer in a tight area behind a jobsite where the truck couldn't make the turn. We hitched the King Quad to the trailer(1760 lbs. empty) and went up a 5% slope with no problem in 4wd low lock. Loaded trailer with just under 2 tons of building debris (it was weighed at dumping) and pulled it out. Total weight about 5500 lbs. Had no trouble pulling (med. packed dirt) but had to go real sloooow and have two guys ready to chock the trailer wheels just in case it didn't stop. We did about 8 trips total with no problems. BTW the KQ is a great trail bike for the long and rough trails in Tennessee. I rarely get stuck and often pull others out of the mud. The rear axles are perfect for rock climbing. All in all it's a great bike for exploring 30 miles into the middle of nowhere and knowing that it will get you back out. However, every time I ride I wish for 200 more cc's and 2" more suspension.

jaybeecon55,nice evaluation of the King Quad. That KQ sure can pull.

r34,im thinking that the injecter on his quad was not pumping the correct amount of oil.Thats to bad.I hope that never happens to me.I got alot of reveiws on my 00 Xplorer before I bought it,so hopefully I'll be ok,==BILL

Bill... The Xplorer is a nice bike, no doubt about it, I'm sure that you will get years of good service.
My friends will be practically brand new when it's done, I helped, by taking five grits of sand paper starting at 400, and finishing with 1500, to bring back the luster that the plastic body parts had. I'll post a picture on my briefcase, when its done, it looks great.

Kinda sad playboy - Seems that it took you ten years, eleven months and twenty-seven days to come up with that snappy comment.

I have a 96 King Quad and my parents 98 ford explorer had a hole blown in the engine and they left it at my uncles for some time after he pulled it home from the end of our road. After I got my King Quad last March I decided hey lets go see if this thing can pull it back to our property. Me and my dad went down there and hooked it up and noticed it was sunk down into the ground about 6 inches because of recent rain. I was like this ain't gonna work but we tried anyway. I only put it into 4wd low and it pulled no problem out of the holes the tires were in. Can't wait to get it running again so I can do some more work with it. Suspect my rings are bad cause my spark plugs get fould by oil instantly when started.
