King Quad Oil Leak
#3
Well...I would have said the same thing except the dealer has quoted a 15 hour flat rate to complete the job. That's a wopping total of $900 just in labor. Anyone want to buy a good condition King Quad that leaks a little oil?
If anyone has had to replace this I could sure use your insight. Sounds like the motor must be removed and torn down to it's skibby's for it to take 15 hours by a "trained" proffesional.
Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi gohl: I just recently changed the exact same seal on a 93 king quad and an 88 lt2504wd. You will not have to remove engine or take no 15 hrs. Probably 2 to 3 hours tops. Heres how it is done.
- first of all tip the quad onto its side (turn fuel off). Either side it doesnt matter. Then remove the skid plate just below leaky seal. There is a u-joint right where the shaft goes into the engine. This u-joint does come apart. Scrape off all the dirt and gunk and you'll see circlips that hold the u-joint together. Pop these out. By the way you are removing the front half of the u-joint. Once you have the clips out you can disassemble the u-joint.
- when this is complete you'll have access to a nut that is holding the shaft onto the engine. remove this nut. Then the shaft should come out of the engine fairly easy but some persuasion may be needed. Pop out the old seal and install new one. Reverse above steps.I had some help when I did mine but after the first one it really isnt all that bad. Be careful with the u-joint during reassembly.
p.s. both of my seals went at exactly the same time. It just happened to coincide with the same time my neighbour got a new power washer. I'm pretty sure my seals got taken out by directly spraying them with the power washer. Anyhow good luck!

Bobbyclobber - Changed this seal over the weekend...No problems and it took about 3 hours. Next time it will only take 2.
Now I need to decide if I should call the dealer to ask why they would have said 15 hours. Maybe he just couldn't read and the flat rate should have been 1.5 hours?
Thanks again bobbyclobber! You saved me big time! Just send me the consulting bill!
