Z400 Rear shock Giving Me Fits ! !
#1
Anybody else having trouble with their rear shock? I just can't get this thing dialed in!! In the big high speed desert whoops (you have to be able to wheelie through these things or you are dead!!), the front end dives in and the back end bucks. I have played with this thing every way I can (preload, rebound damping, compression damping), but nothing has helped. I think this spring may be unusually stiff for a stock bike, and that may be the root of the problem. The front suspension isn't all that impressive either. I think an aftermarket suspension has just made the top of my list of future mods.
We spent this weekind out in the desert (Ocotillo Wells) and for the most part I just left the Z parked, and went back to the 400EX with its pillow soft, totally dialed in Works Performance suspension.

I have said the same thing about the rear shock. I put WORKS triple rates on the front. The rear spring is a 425# and I replaced it with a 300#. I trail ride and weigh 125#. The spring change helped out alot on the trails but it would bottom if pushed on big jumps. I think I will send it to WORKS for a transplant.

Hey WP,
I'm sure you don't remember who I am. I figured out who you are. You were at Comp park a couple of months ago, the night Jeremy Schell was out on the new Kawi 400. I was talking to John, also there was a guy there that broke his axle on a 400 ex. Anyway, just checking out the site, saw you here and thought I'd say hello. Probably see you around
P.S. I've got the TCS shocks on my Banshee and they work great.

I've heard from people that the 400ex works shocks will work and are the same length as the Z400 shocks. Is this true? I have the chance to get works trips for an EX. Opinions anyone...

Someone told me that there is a difference between Z400 stock shocks and 400ex stock shocks but they look identicle to me. Someone said different valveing but why would showa take the same identicle production line shocks and revalve them to be only slightly better with the same springs, shock bodies etc. Anyone know the answer to this for a fact?

TCS told me they are different enough to matter and the Z has more travel. Sandfan, what were you riding? I see the Dale in your sig, but I don't remember one there. Sucks that Comp closed. Someone stated that Comp just purchased some land. That night they took some pics of me too and did a three page article on me in ATV Rider. Lets ride sometime.
