Default to buy or not to buy 86 lt250r

Ok, me and my bro are looking to get another quad, we already have a 01 raptor with mods, and i was kinda looking to get a lt250 or 250r and i came across this

heres the parts i put on the quad NEW just 4 months ago! piston, rings, reeds, swing arm bearings, chain, sprockets (front and rear), Douglas red label rims with new tires, silver handlebars, grips, ALL the cables, had Gary berrelli rebuild the shock and set it up for serious riding, NEW FMF pipe and silencer. i also completely disassembled the machine and greased, fixed, replaced anything I found wrong with it. THIS QUAD rides and drives like its brand NEW! i will sell it for $2600 and if your serious i will meet you at fox valley offroad to let you ride it. thanks

The motor isn't bored over just a new piston. All the parts are brand new with only 12 hours on them. He sent me pics and it looks like it's in mint condition, the plastic is original and looks damn good. He told me he's the second owner, and the original owner pretty much only rode the quad around the house. I wish i could post the pics, you can still see the hairs on the new tires and the pipe is brand spanking new. Does this sound like a good deal for an 86? Is there any nitorious problems that i should know about?

thanks
dan

Sounds ok to me. Things to look for are cracks at the top shock mount, under the foot pegs on the bottom of the frame tubing. Also look around the front sprocket by the case for cracks or even a hole from the chain coming off ( I myself have not had this problem, but I heard the older LTs did it.) Just look at places where you think would have a lot of stress.

Hope this helps

How about the dependability on these quads? What kind of maintainence should i expect? I'm not doin any racing, just woods riding and such. I don't want something that is goin to be breaking down constantly.

thanks

Well, I can only give you two examples.

My brothers, has had it for a year and probably 10 glamis trips and a pismo, absolutely zero trouble whatsoever.
His bike is super clean and has very low hours though.

A friend, has owned his LT250 for 9 years and has no trouble with it except for a few top end jobs. (is that trouble anyway?)

LT250Rsuperstar said it right, those are the main things to look for. If you're not going to be racing MX it should be a reliable ride.

what are the main reasons for fouling a plug (2 stroke) and how to correct it.

The guy who I got LT from said the #1 problem he had with it was getting way out to his destination,,,,and then fouling....

thought this might be relavent.....

Hey Bing,

There are many possibilities, but here are the ones I know of. He could have had improper jetting or air-fuel mixture of being to rich. If he used the wrong kind of gas/oil fuel premix meaning that he might of put too much 2 stroke oil in it (I have done this b4).
ALSO check your air filter, if it is dirty it will probably make it run rich also.

And hopefully someone else can give a little info.

01raptor04,

I have an 86' and it's never let me down. I think I'm so attached to it that I will never upgrade to the 87+ Quadracers. I love the Quadracers.

Also as with anything up keep/maintenance will always increase its dependability or keep it up.

the thing i think that sucks is the frames on the zukis. mine has more cracks then the local crack *****. i welded them up hopefully they hold. otherwise its top end replacement and keeping your oil clean. no matter what bike you get there is maintenance. if you dont like doing it then this isnt you hobby

Thanks everyone. We went and looked at the quad on saturday and bought it. It's great fun to ride. Yesterday we went riding at a mx track (first time for me) and it was great. I wasn't sure how well it'd do considering it's age, thinking it was really outdated compared to new quads, but it did GREAT. Like someone told me, those quads like the lt250 and 250r were ahead of there time. All people have said about our lt is that you can tell it hasn't hardly been ridden considering it's age. Plus with the 11 tooth front sprocket on it it's got plenty of low end. The swingarm still has the full floater sticker on it. The frame looks straight all around, i haven't found any cracks or anything. Here in a while i'm goin to be looking into getting some performance parts besides the pipe, jet kit, and air filter it's got on it. Where's good internet sites to get parts off of? Everywhere i'v looked pretty much only had parts listed for 87+ qracer. What's the deal with the reeds on this quad? I don't really see a reed cage like on others.

thanks
dan

The reeds are under the cylinder, This is one reason why it is hard to find parts for the 85-86. YOu cant do much but buy a better set of reeds than the stock ones. Trinity offers big bore and stroker kits, but you have to send your own cylinder out to have it done. I am going to have a 290 stroker done to mine this fall. There number is on their website, www.trinityracing.com and They will tell you what they can do
