Is applying oil to an air filter necessary?
#1
I just changed my air filter in my '03 Grizzly 660, and after changing it, I read in the owner's manual to apply air filter oil, or regular motor oil to the filter. Is this necessary? If it is, what is the purpose of doing it? How much do I apply-do I dip it and ring it out? Sorry if it's a dumb question-just don't want to screw anything up. Thanks!

My friends use K&Ns and I don't remember what the stock filter on those was made of. If it's foam like a lawnmower, pour oil on and squeeze it to spread the oil around and when the oil is soaked into the whole thing wring it out. In an oil-foam filter, it's the oil that traps all the dirt. The foam doesn't filter dust out, it just holds the oil that does.

YES, extremely important. Best way is to put filter in a plastic bag, pour a little oil in, then rub the oil into the filter completely. The bag helps keep the oil on the filter, and not on your hands. Squeeze gently to remove excess oil.

That' a great tip 400ViP. I'll have to try it the next time I clean and oil my lawnmower air filter. I always get oil all over my hands and squishing between my fingers. Too bad I didn't hear that one 30 years ago.
