2001 scrambler 500 starter just spins.
This is my first post. I'm hoping someone can help me out.
I have replaced the bendix and the starter and have a new battery. The starter still just spins and never cranks the motor.
Intermittently as I am pushing the button to crank the starter it will stop cranking/spinning and the nuetral light will turn off as well. If I leave it for a few seconds I hear a click somewhere on the Atv and the nuetral light will come back on and then I am able to crank the starter again but the starter still just spins and does not crank the motor. I don't know if that has anything to do with the problem. I'm just giving more info in hopes that someone will be able to help.

First thing I'd do is to check that you have spark. Is the bendix turning the engine over(washer installed behind the bendix?) or is the starter motor itself just spinning? Plus possible you have one problem that's causing the other. Check the gap of the pulse coil to the flywheel. Should be between .020-.040 or so. Check that the face of the pulse coil is clean along with the flywheel area also. Seems like no electric start, but can pull start is a common problem on the 500 ,that is if you can pull start the engine. Here's a post from one member that had a similar problem because of previous rope damage and pulse coil out of alignment.
no spark to plug when using electric starter - Page 3 - ATVConnection.com ATV Enthusiast Community Plus cranking for an extended length of time can cause the main circuit breaker to heat up and trip, cutting power and then reset a little later. Could be the clicking noise you hear. It's located up from the battery in a sealed plastic pouch. Item#3 on this parts break down. Dirt Cheap Yamaha & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse Plus may not be a bad idea to check the condition of the 20 amp breaker by slicing the pouch open. It may be the main source of the problem. Cheap to replace at any auto store if needed for a few bucks. If corroded,it can kick on and off under a load. Couple examples of corroded breakers versus a new one.Hope this helps tracking down the problem.

Thanks for your help! I haven't tried to pull start it since I put the starter in but it pull started no problem after I replaced the bendix. I'll try pull starting it tomorrow. I'll also be trying the other things you've recommended when I get a free Saturday again. Thank you again for your help!
