A guy at work claims that his friends 97 C1500 (2wd) truck will beat my
2000 K1500 (4wd) truck in a street race.
His has a 5.7 vortec, 5 speed manual, aftermarket dual exhaust, and a K&N filter.
Mine has a 5.3 vortec, automatic, stock exhaust, and a K&N filter.

Would it be close?
Would he smoke me?
Would I smoke him?

I think it would be close, but I think I could beat him. He claims he will smoke me.
I know this is off subject, but I would just like to see what some of you guys think.

 

I have to say that he would beat you fairly easily. Not so much for the engine output as the 5.7 and 5.3 are about equal but for the fact that his 5-speed "should" out accelerate your automatic and even more so - your 4x4 is carrying several hundred pounds of extra weight that his 2x doesn't have.

You have a better truck though.

Equal trucks with the same tranny and gearing a 5.3 will outrun the 5.7.

Are you sure he has a 5.7? I am almost positive you can only get the 5-speed with the 5.0 motor. I don't believe the 5-speed was offered on the 5.7. In that case you should take him.

 

I believe that you can get the 5 speed with the 350 or 5.7. This is the combination that most of the 2500 work trucks have, but I don't know if it was available in the half ton. The 5.3 is a more powerful engine that revs faster, however if it's modded, the 5.7 wakes up much more easily. A late style (one piece rear main seal) block with the vortec heads (basically iron fast burn corvette heads) is the engine of choice to build a powerful, yet reliable chevy small block on a budget.

 

His truck definetely is a 5.7 with a 5-speed.
I am also pretty sure that he has 3.55 gears.
My truck has 3.73 gears.
I am also well aware that the old 350 responds well to light mods.
But, the 2wd thing is what would probably take me.
He said he could smoke me, but I dont think that would be the case.
I think it would be a lot closer than he thinks.

that is correct and i used to have an 01 5.3 with 4.10 gears it was a very quick truck copared to my older 5.7 with 3.73 gears now i have an 04 with an 8.1 and 4.10 gears and this this besides being a gas hog rocks

 

it'll be a close race. However, you will get the jump on him with the auto. I predict he will start reeling you in around 50MPH...

 

it wouldnt matter which one was fastest it would be which one is quickest cuz you are both gonna shut down between 97-99 mph trust me on that one

 

My friend has a vortec 5.7 4x4 (not sure what year) and my other has a newer 4x4 vortec 5.3 2003 and the 5.7 takes it all the time
