you're right. it takes a man to stand corrected. just do it one more time please.

the cars of yesteryear that we all love had their horsepower and torque measured as "gross". this was basically just the engine by itself with nothing attached. cars today are advertised with "net" horsepower. that's measured with all accessories and at the flywheel, not at the rear wheels. to get rear wheel horse power or RWHP, you have to take into account drivetrain loss. for manuals, it averages 10% - to 12%. automatics average 15% - 18%. all wheel drive transmissions can be 20% or higher. the eclipse i had had a drivetrain loss of 22%. these are generally accepted values and can and do vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

i'm not trying to bust your chops, i'm sure you're a great guy. below is a link that you can read in case i didn't explain it clearly. my wife says i don't explain things very well sometimes.

this second link i found explains everything much more eloquently than i ever could.. look at the "SAE Net Horsepower" and "Wheel Horsepower" sections.

i can agree with you about the ford gt though. it's one fine piece of machinery. i drool every time i see one.

Live and learn i took it as they rated it at the rear wheels. There was such a drop in HP numbers after 1971 i thought for sure the numbers came from the rear wheels. I guess not. I knew they changed they way it was measured HP.

Thanks for the links good info.....

BTW Its no problem at all if i'm wrong tell me, we all can't be right 100% of the time, actually your doing me a favor by calling me on this i gained knowledge thats always a plus

Default mercury beating a ram?

Oh wow,,, I have to jump in here and ask the question.... WHO CARES? I've owned Fords all my life, but this go round I bought a Dodge Ram, because it was the only truck available that I could get my leg into to go back and forth to the physical therapy place after surgery. And yeah, I got the Hemi... I have to say for a quad cab that weighs in at a portly 6000 pounds... it gets with the program. Do I like it,, Heck yes... would a lightning beat it, well if something that weighs 2000 Plus pounds less than the Ram can't beat it... it would be a sorry day.

Again, I say, who cares... you take care of it, and any truck will survive and give good service.

I guess now I am waiting for some KID to jump in and tell me about his dad's stock HEMI ram beating an LS6 Corvette... go figure... Ah no...

I have seen a 1993 Mazda RX7 twin turbo take one though and spanked him badly... actually made a hundred bucks off that one.... but in all honesty, the Rotary was built by Ari Yalun, and with his turbo's set on kill, and the additional fuel injectors working, the motor approaches a thousand horsepower.. in a 2200 pound car. So the Vette didn't stand a chance... and it can go around a corner at speeds approaching slot car status..

And for those of you that doubt the claims, do a little research on Ari Yalun, and Turbo Rotary's and other small cars before you start claiming foul....I've seen many 4 cylinder cars with turbos pumping well in excess of a thousand horses at some of the NOPI events. Oh yeah, and bring your money with you... I like it in hundred dollar bills please...

Just for the record guys, the Hemi is just a shape. It means the combustion chamber is a HEMIspherical shape. Dodge tried the Wedge too, didn't work as good. The HEMI isn't really a big deal, it's the name. Ever since Dodge started spanking poeple with the 392 Hemi, and then kicked it up to a 426 Hemi the rest of the auto companies took notice that the HEMIspherical combustion chamber worked really well. Just for the record, my 85 Escort had a Hemi. So does my 2002 Chevy pickup with a 5.3. I should know, I work at the GM Powertrain plant where it was built . Dodge just cranked up the tuning a bit, something that EVERY auto company knows how to do, BUT, and I do say BUT, they also tagged on the word HEMI. And as us old folks know and remember, the Hemi meant POWER. So welcome to the new age of Dodge, grabbing middle aged folks by the memories and reining them in to take another look at the goods.

It's all about marketing.
Everybody makes a good car, the bad ones don't last, remember Yugo?

BTW I can POUND a Mountianeer with my wifes 4 cyl Cougar. The guy in the Dodge wasn't even trying.
Also, an SRT10 runs a 13.8 1/4 mile, and a 93 Cobra runs a 14.6 .both stock.
If it was a 2000 Cobra, different story, that runs a 13.5

Well, first of all the '93s were the old box style mustangs. The last year in fact. '94 saw the debut of the current platform. The old Cobras were 302cid. The new ones are 4.6L (281cid, IIRC) and DOHC. Plus you have 7 years worth of advancements. They just slowly kick up the power.

Well, he doesn't even have a 5.0. It's a 4.9. 5.0 was just Ford Marketing getting a hold of it. GMs 305 is a true 5.0 liter motor. The 302 motor is like 4,94x CC. You can't round that number up to one significant decimal and come up with 5.0. A 5 Liter, yes. But not 5.0. Note, there IS a difference in those numbers. And 1 cubic inch can be all the difference. The old GM 350 was a 5.7L, while the Ford 351 was a 5.8.

The 302 was made for MANY years. Over 20. I believe production on it stopped around 1996 (at least for new cars) when the new 1997 Ford F-150 came on line using the new modular Ford V8s. Though, they may still be making them for replacements, or crate motors. So there are a TON of hop ups and tuning parts available for it. The new 4.6s have 10 years under their belts now and the tuners have figured them out.
