Keepin the Pyro down
#11
I've got the old 97' Powerstroke (just before the intercooler) and recently bought a Superchips re-programmer. Earlier I had a 4" exhaust installed, and just before I bought the chip I had a set of guages installed (Pyro, boost, and tranny temp). I programmed the mid-range upgrade for 'around town' and when just towing my ATV trailer. When we tow both the ATV trailer and our travel trailer, I drop down to the lowest program. It works just fine. We've got a couple really steep climbs to pull when going to our favorite camping/ATV'ing spot and I just keep an eye on the pyro. It'll get close to the 1200-1250 mark and I back out of it a little. Temp goes down - and I'm happy.
The biggest thing I like about the Superchip re-programmer is the re-programming of the transmission shifting. Man, what a difference. No more sloppy, slidey shifting. It's BAM, BAM, BAM! I was going to get an aftermarket tranny cooler because I figured it had to be overheating with all this towing. Not so. That dinky little stock cooler actually does an admirable job. The guage doesn't even come up to the lowest temperature until well down the road, and when climbing steep grades it rarely hits the 195-200 mark. I'm impressed!
I'm sure all these benefits can be had with any of the re-programming kits out there. I just happen to have Superchips. I do think it's important to follow the instructions regarding which program to use for what kind of driving/towing you're going to do. You don't want to burn up your toys!!!

Don't wory about 1,100f. I ran my gas rig 1,350 down the road. And that was post turbo. I have even ran 1,500f pre turbo for maybe 20 or 30 seconds at a time with no problems.
If it really bothers you, you can jack up the boost and that will lower the EGT and give you more power to boot. They also make a water injection for diesels. Or if you have the big $$$$$$ get a intercooler.

mr tommy what superchip are you running they have an older model 1700 that has two setting and a new model 1705 that has three setting. i was wondering if the older model one helps with the trans shifting or do you have to by the newer model

Hey Joker,
I've got the 1705 model, with the three settings. It really 'champs' me to see that if I had a one year newer PS (when they came out with the intercooler), I'd be able to get twice the HP and torque. Oh well, the Superchips tuner really makes a difference anyway. I've tried all three settings and I think I'll finally just keep it at the lowest one so I can tow either of my trailers, or both, without having to re-program, though the whole re-programming process takes less than 5 minutes.
I sure do love the new shifting!

never heard of water injection on a diesel, but obviously if he's only running 1100 he needs no further mods. If it gets over 1250, I would go intake and then turbo housing, then bigger intercooler. Propane injection is a option also, but I have no experience with it.

if you already have intake and exhaust, you need to dump that heat with a lbigger turbo. I have a 4.5 dodge cummins and have similar problems with mine while towing. Other than stock 4 " exhaust i have straight pipe and an intake system. Iv'e tried 3 boxes and will end up with the juice with attitude because of the egt backdown and other features.
