2003 Durango and 26foot toybox towing
Hello,
Anyone out there towing a 26foot toybox with a 2003 Dodge Durango?
It has 4.7 L with a 360 engine in it.
I am considering buying a toybox with a bedroom in it rather than the 21 foot one I
had. 26 foot toybox weighs 5800 lbs. Durango with the Class IV Receiver hitch is supposed to tow 7400 lbs. Last toybox was 21 foot that weighed 5090. Couple of trips to Pismo a year and two trips to the River. That's about it. One grade to Pismo and one to the river. I don't see a problem but would appreciate advice from other Durango owners or 1/2 ton owners pulling 26 foot toybox with separate bedroom in it.
Thanks, Chuck-Raptorman

A lady I work with had a Dakota with the 4.7 in it. She bought a 24 foot camper and an atv and wanted to go to Wisconsin with us last year. The day before we left she went to get the camper from storage and bring it to where we where all going to meet up. There was a hard head wind and all she could get out of it was 45 mph flat to the flore. So I tlod her to tow my little 6x10 flat trailer with 2 atvs on it and her own in the back of her box and I would tow her camperwith my truck in my sig below for her because I wasent driving 45 mph to wisconsin. As it turns out she couldent even keep up with me with only the ATVs behind her. I was able to drive whatever speed I wanted into a 40+ mph head wind. I was running around 80 and she couldent even get her Dakota to go that fast against the wind with 3 atvs behind her. It would kick out of OD going down the interstate and then run out of RPMs before she got past 70-75. She had the 4.7 whitch as has been stated IS NOT THE 360. The 360 probobly would have been far better off. A week after we got back she went and traded her Dakota for a full size GMC.

I completely agree with Blackandredwarrior !!! Do not even think about a 26 foot seperate bedroom toy hauler behind a Durango. You will be waaay sorry the first time you hook it up and it drops the back of your Durango onto the street. I have a 26 foot front sleeper toyhauler and I would not even think of hooking it up to anything less than a 3/4 ton.

Have to agree with b&rw and tmm2good on this. My research shows the GVWR on a 2003 Durango with a 4.7 has a GVWR of 6400 lbs. Not much room for towing a 26' trailer. You still need to consider your passengers, fuel and whatever you plan on putting in the Durango. Then, what about the trailer. A 26 foot trailer is going to be heavier then you think. Then you add in water, gray/black water, fuel station, quads, riding gear, camping gear, etc. You are maxing the weight on your combined vehicles tremendously Now, throw in the Cuesta Grade You are asking for nothing but trouble in your set-up. I just don't see where you can safely traverse along the highway and get up and down the Cuesta GRade with out putting everyone around you in harm's way.
You need to get a vehicle that will do the job and leave some room for error.

The only SUV's I'd even think about putting that size of a TH behind is a 2500 Suburban (with the 8.1L) or an Excursion (get the PSD). A Tahoe is just a 1500 Chevy. That's still too small for a TH, especially that big.
